Duke First Year Schedule

Hello, I am going to Duke as a pre-med, and I am confused about what I should take. I have planned out my courses for the fall, but I am not sure if it is the right track for me as a pre-med. I have not decided on a major, but I am thinking of math or neuroscience. Here is what I plan on taking:

  1. Chemistry 101 (I did not take chemistry in high school but I am going to take a general chemistry this summer at my local college)
  2. Calculus (Taken a year of calculus in high school but not AP)
  3. writing 101/ seminar
  4. neuroscience 101

I don’t know if there are any other requirements for first year students, but I am also thinking of taking French 101. Are there any courses freshmen must take? Does this meet the pre-med course requirements? I know this is going to be very difficult for me, especially coming from a low-income family. But financial aid is the least of my worries.

Looks like a great first-semester schedule to me.

As I am confident you know, there is no “pre-med” major at Duke. Pre-med requirements are all essentially the same, and are determined by med school requirements. Your schedule above includes Intro level college courses, and as such certainly starts you on the right track. Duke has a pre-med advisory team/department that can help you next year and beyond, when you will get much deeper into true "pre-med " courses (Orgo, Bio, etc).

@2Devils Thank you. It’s been awhile since I was here. My courses are now:
Chemistry 101
Math 105
French 101
Writing 101
I’ve made a balance between my schedule to take the classes I’m interested in. I also want to have fun as well and enjoy freshmen year without studying too much. Of course chemistry and math are my main priorities as a premed.
