Duke FOCUS Program - App due this Tuesday!!

Hey guys,

I know that the FOCUS application is due this Tuesday but I'm still debating over whether or not I should join. I am planning on majoring in BME and maybe studying pre-med as well. Will I still have time in my schedule for FOCUS?

My preference for FOCUS, in this order, is: The Genome Revolution, Exploring the Mind, The Faces of Science, and Engineering Frontiers.

So, anyone out there who is in FOCUS or knows about it? Do you think that I can fit in FOCUS with the rest of my schedule? And will my workload be increased by a lot?

Please respond! Thanks!

I’m taking that you are a Pratt student. Well Engineering is very rigorous. Duke BME, being one of the top in the nation, didn’t get there by accident. Duke BME is difficult, although not as much as JHU’s but it is difficult and takes up a lot of time. Now the Focus programs is a seminar, it isn’t really a class so it is more laid back but not like a class where you can do nothing, you still have to do some reading and finish other assignments.

So do you think I’d have time for both? Or will BME take up all my time?

Yea, I am a Pratt student.

I’m not too familiar with the Pratt student’s curriculum so my answer won’t be totally accurate. It mainly depends on what level courses you are taking. Are you going to take the intro classes or are you using AP/IB credits to place into higher level classes?

I’m not sure which classes I’m going to waive but I do have a lot of AP credit. I got 5s in Calc AB, Calc BC, Chem, Bio, US, Gov, and Lang.

Actually, that’s also a question of mine. I heard Math 32 was killer and I can get out of it with Calc. But I haven’t taken Calc in a while and forgot a lot of it. Should I still place into a higher class?

Just wondering~ did you go for the FOCUS program in the end? It’d be nice to know a fellow Pratt Focus-er.

Haha, yea I did. I got into the Genome revolution. What about you?

hey so i REALLY can not decide between these two focus groups and the deadline is this monday! (roughly 2 days away)

Visions of freedom: i keep hearing extraordinarily positive things about this focus, which is great. BUT i also hear that the work load is extremely heavy and that Gillespie is a particularly HARD teacher. I’m scared to take this one! I don’t want to do badly with my grades on top of everything with being new in college.

Power of Language: Seems pretty interesting, since im possibly thinking of being a lawyer. BUT its not as interesting as the Visions of Freedom one. yet, Newcity is supposedly the easiest teacher to grace this planet, so id be guaranteed an A and not have to stress out as much.

ANY response would help!
