Duke Lax Earns Chance to Complete Inspiring Season

The Duke University lacrosse team, one year after having its season cancelled in response to rape charges being levied against three of its members (the charges were later dropped), defeated Cornell University today 12-11 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The Blue Devils, led this season by attackmen Matt Danowski, a Long Island native and son of head coach John Danowski, and Zack Greer, scored eight unanswered goals to mount a 10-3 lead late in the third quarter.

The Big Red, however, launched a miraculous comeback in the late third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Blue Devils 8-1. Brian Clayton scored the equalizer for Cornell with 17 seconds left in regulation to even the score at 11.

Greer, a junior, led Duke in scoring this season with over 60 goals. Because of this, it was fitting, almost expected, when he scored the game-winning goal with three seconds left to stun Cornell, who moments ago had been celebrating its own thrilling score.

By notching his fourth goal of the afternoon, Greer saved his team from the embarrassment of playing overtime and possibly losing to a team the Blue Devils had dominated for most of the game. Duke will face Johns Hopkins, who dismissed Delaware 8-3 today, on Monday in the NCAA Championship Game.

For the 13 seniors on this team, Monday’s game likely represents their last chance for collegiate lacrosse success. After losing the opportunity to compete in last year’s postseason tournament, ending this season on top would prove effective in easing the bitterness caused by last year’s legal antics and provide the upperclassmen with a feeling of vindication, since last year’s squad had as much championship potential as the current version. -CM
