So Duke has an option essay asking about gender identity/culture/community, and it’s marked as optional. From my understanding, it’s more of a LGBT thing, but if I wrote an essay about my swim team being a community for me, do you guys think this fits here, or should I just leave it blank?
“If you’d like to share a perspective you bring or experiences you’ve had to help us understand you better—perhaps related to a community you belong to…”
If your participation in that community would help the admissions committee understand you, do it. A good essay could do this. A bad one could come off as trite. Have you had others read it?
I’m white/cis/het but I wrote about growing up very poor and how that shaped my perspective. The admissions officer wrote me a little note in my acceptance packet mentioning it specifically. So if you have something to write about I would, if not don’t worry about it!
