duke or columbia

thinking about going into law...politics...nonprofit. currently attend duke. hate the town. accepted to columbia and said yes but am having last thoughts. any advice? please throw tough questions at me...i feel like ihavent thought this through enough.

wat's wrong w. Duke??

Duke simply does not have the reputation Columbia does, in the Northeast at least. You will have plenty of opportunities at both, but I think you made the right choice. Especially if you play lacrosse.

i do think u made the right choice......i would love to go to columbia above any other school....including HYPS

i dont know... my friends at duke are having an amazing time ... i've never heard anything bad about the place (except for lacrosse) whereas i hear a lot of complaints about columbia.
i dunno, i guess it depends on what your personality fits... if i were you, i'd stay at duke, where you have had time to be more established in terms of friends, profs, social/sports, and extracurriculars...

I heard the social life at Duke is amazing - I wish I applied. Columbia is the ivy equivalent of the University of Chicago, so I would be wary if you're coming from such a social place to a place that isn't really going to provide that. If I were you I would stay at Duke. Please don't transfer for prestige. Go/stay where you're going to be the happiest - only you can really decide that.

Duke for premed students, Columbia for everyone else.
Some of the people who are telling you to stay at Duke have been waitlisted at Columbia, so I would take their advice with a grain of salt if I were you.
If you'd like a more urban school, you should definitely go for it.

i am a waitlist at columbia, and i thin that columbia is absolutely the most amazing school

Transferbansfer wouldn't be competing with those who are waitlisted. He is being admitted as a transfer student.

bball meant that he was waitlisted as a transfer student. And I hope he gets in.

What a silly statement. 25% of Duke grads work in NYC after graduation, and another 25% work in DC.

Don't be too hasty in your decision (but don't agonize either). New York City will always be there later- but college won't.

I am waitlisted as is bball87, but its not my intent to try and keep you away from Columbia if that is where you want to go and your gut is telling you to go. I do think that it is similar to Chicago as far as social life is concerned (besides being in the best city in the world) so you might be disappointed with it. Anyways, the culture at Duke is probably nice in a way but bad in others, so Columbia might be better fit.

That said, Duke and Columbia are both amazing places and you can't really go wrong with either. If you're not happy a change of environment might be good, but I got into a school as a transfer and I'm going through similar doubts as well.

columbia. im from nc and duke is practically an ivy here. but ultimately its not. although i dont think reputation is everything. columbia has a great location lots of opp. for internships, etc. where dirty durham...has great opp. for...social work? haha j/k but honestly i think as far as location goes columbia has alot more to offer.

lol. NYC is unbeatable as far as proximity to jobs, arts and whatever else is worthwhile in the US.

hey again

i thought duke was an ivy?

also, i was admitted to columbia. i love nyc, but i also know that columbia's campus can be impersonal and the social life less tight-knit than duke, etc etc. i didnt apply to duke, so im only going by my duke friends' opinions and not specific research or anything... they are having an amazing time.

Duke and Columbia, prestige wise and all, are very similar...Duke and I'm sure Columbia are top feeders into law schools since it looked like you were itnerested in that

People who say Columbia has a better Northeast reputation might be right slightly, but US News, WSJ Feeder Rankings, and International Rankings like the London Times have them similar and often with Duke at the edge (this could be because Duke is more preprofessional than intellectual). Student bodies are both top notch, with Duke's 25/75 1380-1550 and Columbia's 1360-1530, so a degree from eacher will be viewed highly.

First, why don't you like Duke? Its said to have Ivy academics and a better social scene (obviousy academics not as prestigious as Harvard, but just as prestigious as others)? Did you not fit in? Hated the freshman campus? If transportation is the issue, it would be easy to talk to local volunteer groups and arrange rides in that manner.

PS

You might want to post on the Duke board if you have questions about comm service, it seems like most of them do that sort of thing over there...

dude-----eveyrtime u post...u post duke;s sat scores....u seem really infatuated with them....they are indeed impressive...but u got them down to memory by now

i still use collegeboard as my source...idk crap...i couldn't even tell u cornell's or chicago, or w.e.

Well, they are a good measure of a student body, aren't they? That's why I usually post them for different schools. Its one of the few ways you can compare the academics/strength of one college to another. (and yeah I have Duke's and Dartmouth's and Cornell's memorized from collegeboard from looking at it so often, its relaly sad)

Are you CC-stalking me? haha

not really

just curious, since Duke is a D1 sports school with a bball and football team to staff, how does it keep the scores so high

and the non big contender sports like LAX and others, i know, offer kids admission with not so impressive stats

3 athletes from my hs last year went to duke

all under 1350 SAT scores
