This is not true at all no matter how much I wish it was. In the summer, they get close to as hot, but in the winter, Durham is much colder. How much?

According to Accuweather.com,
Durham:
January
Normal High: 49°F
Normal Low: 29°F
Normal Average: 39°F

Los Angeles:
January
Normal High: 68°F
Normal Low: 48°F
Normal Average: 58°F

Philadelphia:
January
Normal High: 39°F
Normal Low: 25°F
Normal Average: 32°F

That’s a good deal 20 degrees colder on average. As you can see, Philadelphia is only 7 degrees colder on average than Durham is in the winter (it’s only a 7 hour drive north), and you’ll barely see snow in the city because it’s cleaned up so fast. Anyway, you probably shouldn’t pick based on weather since the differences are pretty minor. If it makes you feel better, you could probably find someone with a car and go to the mountains like 2-3 hours away to get a dose of snow and cold.

For those of you who attend(ed) Duke, do you ever feel bored of it? I mean, there really isn’t much to do outside of campus. Do you ever get sick of just staying on campus?

As an undergraduate, your life revolves around campus. I found there was never enough time to do all the activites I wanted to do on campus. There are always lectures, performances, movies, meetings, sporting events etc, etc. I didn’t get off campus much - there was no need.
If you do run out of possiblities on campus (and by the way, the Duke Gardens are beautiful if you just want to feel like “getting away”), Durham Bulls baseball is Triple A and a fun outing . Durham is known regionally for the arts (new Performing Arts Center) and restaurants (expensive but great). If you have a car, there is an enormous mall not far away. There is even NHL hockey not far away in Raleigh, although tickets are quite expensive, but the team is fun to watch (2006 Stanley Cup Champs). The mountains are 3 hours away, the beach is 3 hours east. So, there is no shortage of on- and off-campus actvities.

^^^^I have refrained from posting on that thread so as not to feed the ■■■■■■.
They are both great schools. You decided what was best for you, which is how it should be done. Congrats.

glasstiger, i’m a little confused. according to that post, you choose duke. yet you seem insecure about your choice.

basically, we don’t need to constantly defend our school in front of others who obviously has something against it. congrats, you made a choice and i’m glad that we will probably see each other next year. but like you said, in your thread, penn and duke are equal in academics and prestige. it just comes down to which fits you more. penn students may believe they are far superior… sorry to burst their bubble, but they’re not.

I’m not insecure. I was just trying to tell the Penn fanatics that Penn and Duke are equals. Nearly everyone in that thread was saying how Penn is leagues above Duke, when it really isn’t. I know I shouldn’t care but ignorance is my biggest peeve. I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone :(

Nah I’m glad you defended Duke. UPenn people are just mad because about 90 percent of the population thinks UPenn is a public university or have never heard of it.

Penn is not leagues above Duke…but it is more selective and has kids with better stats. If you look at the top 10 for US News, its surprising to see that Duke’s acceptance rate and SAT median scores really aren’t the same as the schools it claims to be equal to (HYPS)

Uhm Penn and Duke are essentially in the same league/level. I don’t see why the people over at the Penn forum have to go nuts, when both Penn and Duke are great schools and basically the same in prestige and etc :O

Hmm I thought Duke had one of the highest SAT averages. I doubt they are much different in selectivity. (Wharton could be an exception) They probably have kids with similar stats as well. Idk why you are saying that, westsidewolf

westsidewolf: Just because a school is more selective doesn’t mean it’s better. According to USNWR, Duke and Penn are both ranked higher than Brown but Brown has a much lower acceptance rate.

stats of duke kids (ie sat scores) are actually higher than that of penn kids. but like mrprez said, i def think wharton is an exception (which is why CAS kids whine when wharton kids get so much more money put into their programs).
