Duke to Harvard...looking back

By the way, nspeds, do you know JT? (He's a GT transfer to Harvard this year)

Sorry, no:/

actually nspeds, I really appreciate your advice. I'm not contradicting it. I just think you need to watch your words.

I really appreciate your advice.

Thank you.

Just keep working hard, and be sure to apply. I had a 3.73 when I was considering a transfer, but I chose not to apply simply because I thought my GPA was too low. I had a chance, and I messed up. Who knows, if you don't get in as a sophomore you can still try for junior standing and with a higher GPA! Just work hard.

wow, thanks, nspeds. (btw, I'm really not a *****...sorry if I came across as that) You did NOT mess up! G-town is an awesome school. It's in DC! Did you watch the Duke v. GT b-ball game...I was there! Yeah, I don't think I would apply as a sophomore because I'm pre-med and it's important I keep doing research with the same prof for 2 or 3 semesters. I'm not even sure if it's worth transferring now because I spoke with a Harvard bio prof, and I'd have to take a fundamental bio course again, etc whereas if I stay at Duke, I can jump into the good stuff like biochem and cell/developmental bio since I'm already on an advanced track. I don't know if I want to give that up.

heated debate. i guess everyone is just trying to say the same thing, that just because you go to a good school doesn't mean guaranteed acceptance. however, the thing is that bluedevil nver said that she was guaranteed or anything, she knows that chances are slim for everyone. so, naturally she will get upset if you continually tell here discouraging stuff. but i do realize the point you are trying to make nspeds, and you did say she has a shot.

So bluedevil, your not going to apply anymore? yay, one less competitor for ME! lololol, just kidding. i hope you do whats best for you. im not even sure if ill apply. its very tough to get in and its a long applicatino process..plus i have like no chance, if your coming from duke and you feel you don't have a shot then me coming from berkeley...i dunno

yeah, but you have a 4.0! That'll be like a shining gold star on your app. I'm still applying, buddy, but my chances are nil. And also, I got a little belligerent with nspeds because he sounds JUST LIKE MY DAD. What he was saying sounded just like every lecture my dad's given me since I decided to apply. It was scary!!!

yes, but he had no right to call you an idiot, good lucky buddy, i hope at least one of us gets in, although highly unlikely. i am also applying to stanford, Chicago, and UPenn, so we'll see, maybe one of those willcome through for me. My gf goes to MIT, so if i get into harvard, i would literally be the happiest person in the world, like right now we are on opposite coasts....haha, whatever everything is for the best i guess

i got into U of Chicago as a freshman, i would stay AWAY...very bad social life there, i visited, the kids seemed miserable and I met like 3-4 U of Chicago transfers at Northwestern...just a word of advice

yeah, I was choosing between Penn and Duke last year.

word of advice: don't go to Penn...the students were SO intense. My friends hate it there.

okay guys, maybe your right. but i've talked to people, and several of them actually liked it, so ill see. I will visit probably, if I get in. Visiting really seems to say a lot, I need to make a decision for myself. I appreciate the advise though. I definitely don't want to make a mistake twice, but I also don't want to let a school go without at least giving it a chance.

UChicago has one of the worst cases of Ivy-envy I have ever seen. Every student I met was either going to apply for transfer or wanted to transfer but couldn't because their GPA was too low.

damn that sucks maybe I won't feel too bad then if I don't get into UChicago.

The kids in their brochures look really happy :D

Brand....what college brochure doesn't have pictures of happy looking kids and beautiful campuses on it? haha

thank you windcloud that was the joke. ;)

And don't be fooled by the pamphlets: the buildings look huge and the campus looks so majestic. The undergraduates really only use one quad, unless you are living in BJ across Midway. The quad is pretty big, but the school definitely doesn't feel like it has a campus.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. Harvard, though they do have their "yards," tends to blend in with Cambridge. Then again, Cambridge is a nice area to blend into; Hyde Park is definitely not.

well, the Duke pamphlets are completely true...the students are incredibly happy and help each outher out...AND...the campus is GORGEOUS. :) Mostly it's because people bond in the freshman dorms and tenting in K-Ville.

Damn. They really do make it look huge and majestic in the brochures - what with large green spans between buildings like this one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:MidwayView1.JPG

But now that I look at it closer, that's a soccer field, isn't it? :D

I guess that's the good thing about visiting, but it's unfortunate that I don't get the opportunity until after I am, or shall I say if I am, accepted.

yeah, visit AFTER you get accepted because it'll make you want to go there so much more each time you visit (that is, if you like the campus). That's what happened with me...my dad taught seminars at MIT over the summer so I'd be in Cambridge for weeks at a time and fell in love with the place.

nspeds first said:
you're gpa is too low
then along the way bluedevil said:
Maybe that's why both the students who applied for transfers from Duke last year got in, even though neither had above a 3.6.
then nspeds said:
This is an absurd statement precisely because it assumes that GPA is the only factor in the decision
so first you brush him off saying his gpa is too low (and dont say its an exception to the rule....harvard doesnt admit drone 4.0/1600 students...everyone is an exception), and then you go on to hide your own error by heaping it onto him with the claim that he made the assumption that gpa was everything.

BY THE WAY, when you said bluedevil's statement assumes GPA is everything, you clearly didnt use your SAT critical reading skills. in fact it assumes the exact opposite of what you said.

now, while i know arguing with people and calling them stupid on CC is your method of ego stroking and intellectual masturbation, you do need to set limits, because you do this once too often (which is why i needed to post this).

bluedevil, your academics are not hindering you. strive now to write the best essay you've ever written, and keep in mind to project the true you to harvard. this is what they want, and you might just get what you want. :)

Y THE WAY, when you said bluedevil's statement assumes GPA is everything, you clearly didnt use your SAT critical reading skills. in fact it assumes the exact opposite of what you said.
...and your logical reasoning skills are clearly deficient:

If a GPA is too low, you will not be admitted.

The equivalent statement is not...

If a GPA is not too low, you will be admitted.

The equivalent statement is:

If you will be admitted, your GPA is not too low.

So I can argue that one's GPA is too low for admissions; however, having a high enough GPA will allow an admissions officer to consider the application in all seriousness, in which other factors such as SAT scores, essays, recs, and so forth play a significant factor.

You're an idiot: you tried to show me up with blatently fallacious arguments (denying the antecedent). Please, what I do may be referred to as mental masturbation, but you clearly don't have a grasp of what is involved. Pun intended.
