Duke v.s Pomona

I was admitted to Duke Trinity College and Pomona this year. Although I prefer Pomona as I intend to major in PPE, Duke appeals to me with its rich research resources and intern opportunities. I want to know whether I can get the same in Pomona? Is Duke's humanity better than that of Pomona?

There would be more opportunities at Pomona than you would be able to take advantage of, so having even more at Duke is not a tip factor.

An issue with Duke is that the faculty need to attend to their research and graduate students, and sometimes the undergrads get the leftover energy. (Spoken as someone who did graduate work at Duke). This is certainly not unique to Duke, of course.

I just tend to be an LAC fan, all other things being equal. Both are fine schools, however, and you don’t have a “bad” option.

Two totally different choices. Pomona is probably a bit academically stronger, but a vastly different social atmosphere (athletics, partying, frats much bigger at Duke). Also the usual contrasts between SLAC and a university-based college.

Great dilemma you have. Where do you intend to work? Duke will be more respected (by most) on the east coast, but I’d you want to work in the CA area or out west Pomona would be the way to go IMO

Are employers really aware of Pomona? It’s a fabulous school but I feel that LACs like it are excellent for getting students admitted to PhD programs but not necessarily employment. Duke is well known on both coasts, very good at sending students to graduate school and has a better connection with top employers.

Even with regards to sending students to the best law, med and business schools in the country, Duke is still slightly better than Pomona. If this was Williams, it would be a slightly different story.

Duke: #6, 8.61%
Pomona: #13, 6.35%

I think I will on the west coast for a few years or simply go to graduate school immediately after college. I am a international student so it may be tough for me get a job in U.S.

I live in Los Angeles, pretty close to Claremont, and even then I feel like Duke has a better rep than Pomona.

I live less than half an hour away from Pomona and even here Duke is more well-known!

I’m a big fan of Pomona. It is an academic powerhouse and a school that can legimately lower the yields of HYP and AWS. But if you are looking for sponsorship afterwards (ie employment in the US), Duke is a far more sensible choice. Duke is one of the most recruited schools in the nation and you stand a better chance of finding a sponsor-willing employer.

If you are set on grad school then both Duke and Pomona will prepare you well for that, if you take advantage of the opportunities they offer.
