Hello,
I am currently a high school senior and have been admitted to both Duke and UVA. I was having trouble deciding which to attend so I wanted to get some advice to help with my decision. Its going to cost the same for both colleges so money is not an issue. If anyone attending Duke could also tell me about how easy it is in terms of getting internships(during undergrad) and jobs(after graduation) would be great.
P.S: I plan on majoring in Computer Science so jobs/internships in that field
Your employment prospects will be significantly better after graduating from Duke with a degree in computer science. You’re not faced with much of a dilemma in my opinion.
If you want to be in a broer environment, UVA won against Duke by a small margin. So if you are looking for that, go to UVA. Anything else, go to Duke.
It really doesn’t matter. Choose where you feel more comfortable. Don’t pay for high-priced schools when you don’t have to. What you do with the opportunities are far more important than the school choice; what you create there, the relationships with people and technology is what is important. Duke is a wonderful school, so is UVA. Don’t pay for undergraduate school if you don’t have to–go to the school that pays you most to go there. Your talent, training, and tireless results are what will provide your return on investment. Not the choice between excellent schools. Best of luck.
This is not exactly an unbiased thread! Seriously, ask your counsellor or someone not associated with either university. If you post the question on the UVA board, you’ll get a very different response.
If someone asked me whether they should attend Duke or Stanford I’d advice them to go to Stanford in the absence of a compelling reason to attend Duke (like a scholarship or being recruited to play a sport or majoring in something very specific like BME). I suspect that most objective UVA students would advice the OP to attend Duke over their alma mater.
If cost is the same, Duke would be the clear choice for most students. But if you are qualified enough to get into Duke and you prefer UVa from a fit perspective, you likely will do great at UVa and beyond. Both excellent schools.
