Duke vs. Med Program

Hey so I got into Duke and also Miami's HPM med program. I don't have any finaid at Duke, but since it is very prestigious, I think that I might get into a good med school if I work hard. But at Miami, I have a half ride and am guaranteed into their med school after three years of undergrad if I maintain a 3.7 GPA. I have to go to Miami med school, but I can apply to other med schools if I choose to give up my guaranteed spot. My question is which one should I pick? It is basically security vs. prestige here.

Yeah. I’m in a similar situation. Accepted at a state school with close to a full-ride and a spot in honors college; university has solid medical school and its own hospital… blah blah yadda yadda yadda.

Duke is a top 10 college in the nation. If you can afford it, I’d go without question.

Getting a 3.7 in college is not trivial. Don’t count on getting one without a tremendous amount of work.

My daughter got accepted into Duke. She is interested in BME and likes the campus. She also got Boston University 7 year medical program and she likes Medicine too. Trying to figure out which one is the right choice…

I was accepted to the UM HPM as well and will likely attend. However, I was rejected from Duke. If I was accepted to Duke, I would still choose UM HPM in a heart beat because UM is cheaper, the medical school is solid and getting better, and UM undergrad will be great without the stress and because UM is so nice. By the way, the students and director of the program confirmed that there is no attrition in the program, so the 3.7 GPA (3.5 for the 8 year option) and 28 MCAT score are apparently not problems. And if your GPA is below, you are simply put on “probation” for a semester.

rajunt, I would recommend that your daughter choose the med program as well, for similar reasons (though you may want to look into the specifics about the BU program).

thanks smeagz… the EFC is same in both Duke and BU. She is also more leaning towards BU 7 yr med program, especially after seeing the med school stats… we have one more month to finalize…

If you want to go to Med school for sure, take the guaranteed spot.

rajunt: is your D set on going to medical school? If so, I would encourage her to take an in-depth look at the BME program at Duke. As a BME/Premed, I would like to point out that BME is nothing like what most people imagine it to be when they hear the name. The curriculum at Duke actually has very little to do directly with medicine (though it’s not hard to find connections if you look underneath the surface). If your D is set on becoming a doctor, BME might not be the best program for her. Of course, if she likes BME then Duke has one of the best programs in the country and is a great choice.

Here’s some data on Duke pre-meds to help with your decision. As you can see, Duke gives one a pretty good shot at getting into med school. Plus, God forbid that she doesn’t want to go to medical school (who really knows what they want when they’re 18 anyway?), Duke will give her other options. Furthermore, you only get to be an undergraduate once! Think about where you would be happier, too. The people at Duke are amazing. Anyway, best of luck on your decision. You can’t really go wrong.

My D got into U Pitt Guaranteed medical program as well with full tution for 4 years of UG. Considering this reason as well as U Pitt Med school is one of the best in the country, we think this is better choice than Boston University 7 year med program, where the aid is just 13K. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
