Miami HPM or Duke undergrad?

I was accepted to both Duke undergrad and Miami HPM 7 year medical school. What do you think I should do?

its great that you got into both, its really a big accomplisment, but i would personally go to duke. its one of the nation's best undergrads and also one of the best med schools also. attending the ugrad there also gives you a better shot at attending the med school. in my opinoin, i would take a good medical education over a guaranteed spot; your gonna work hard regardless b/c its not like the accelerated progs give you room to slack off. duke is a great, fun school and on top of htat, you get a free ipod for going there ;)

I disagree with the post above. I believe that you should take the Miami HPM offer. Duke is definitely an excellent school by all accounts, no doubt about that. But the stress of applying to med school is by far one of the worst things you will encounter in your educational career and if you can avoid it, you should. Imagine, you studied for months for the mcats. You get a good score, great, does that mean anything yet? You apply to tons of med schools around the country. Thousands of dollars spent. You get some interviews, now you have to pay plane fare to go to each place. Finally, you have to survive the "rounds" of admission. And at the end, its not guaranteed. You can avoid that with the med program, and you should.

Are you SURE you want to do medicine?

yea im sure i wanna do medicine. at miami 7 yr med i only need to maintain a 3.7 to go into the med school. If i thought that i would have to work just as hard at miami as duke i would hands down go to duke. miami is appealing to me because when i look at it, it seems as if i wouldnt have as much pressure to get good grades. if these thoughts are false please tell me. elaborate

i wanna have fun in college and dont wanna kill myself getting good grades. from what i have heard im not sure if its right, i will basically be relaxin at miami and killin myself at duke. pleaseeeee help me this is the most important decision i have had to make in my life thus far.

(post retracted)

There are numerous other threads comparing BA/MD programs to top schools, you should take a look at those. In my opinion, if you're sure that you want to do medicine, you should go to the BA/MD program; it is a unique opportunity afforded to a select few. Being able to bypass med school applications, MCATs, etc., is a dream that many wish they could experience.

As long as you don't play lacrosse or are a stripper, I say go to Duke :P. I mean, if you're good enough for Duke and you keep working hard, you have a good chance at getting into another med school anyway.

P.S. (off-topic)- I'm sorry about the tasteless joke. I really think whoever did that (and I'm pretty sure the one Irish boy did do it) should be in jail for a really long time. Jerks.

i think miami hpm is the best... i got in too and it's such a terrific medical school not to mention weather... you get to forge so many great connections and you'll probably be top of your class at u. miami (which you will definitely have fun at), besides you get to save so much money by going 7 years... but then again it's personal choice

Miami HPM.

is it common to maintain the 3.7 or do some students struggle with it? anyone who's currently in the program elaborate on how many students actually stay in the program and go on to the medical school part and if any in your class have had to leave for various reasons academic or not...thanks so much

my brother's in the program (6 year option for his class), and he knows of only 1 person who got kicked out...for unknown reason. Anyways, maintaining a 3.7 GPA seems more rigorous than other medical programs which ask for 3.5 or even as low as 3.3. It's worth going to an accelerated medical program, transfer out after the 1st year if you don't like it. Send in multiple deposits though so if you change your mind at the last moment, you can still go to Duke. Who knows, you may not like Miami after you see all of it and not just the media's picture of paradise in South Beach. UM's Medical School is in a pretty trashy area and most of Miami is rundown, unless you are near the bay or ocean. But I would still choose the program.

keep in mind that if you choose to graduate after 8 years instead of 7 you only need a 3.5 at Miami

Hey brandaman11 , what did you end up deciding on? I will be attending Miami HPM myself and I was curious as to whether I would see you there.
