im posting this for a friend who is having trouble deciding between going to Duke and Northwestern. she's an asian-american currently living in the bay area, california. she's not entirely sure about her major, but is thinking along the lines of business/international relations, and maybe a minor in music. one concern is that if she does go into that major, which school would she benefit from the most to continue into grad school?

As well-known as NU's Kellogg is, it doesn't have an undergrad business program. Instead, the business-oriented students often major in economics. As far as econ goes, NU has a higher ranked and slightly more reputable program.

I don't think either school has an obvious edge in preparing people for graduate school. They both have the resources to do it but it is up to the student to use them. Northwestern would have to beat Duke in music, and has come up a couple times, a student does not sacrifice much of anything by studying business disciplines as an undergrad at Northwestern vs. someplace else. I also think they are probably pretty comparable in terms of IR...some good people at both places. Northwestern has been spending a lot of resources on its international studies program lately and making it a priority so that might help.
