Duke vs. UVA Echols Scholar vs. BC Honors Program

Hello! I’m having a really tough time deciding between Duke, UVA Echols or the BC Honors Program. I’m interested in pre-med but also want to keep my options open for some sort of business degree.

I still did not file FAFSA and or CSS yet so financial aid packages aren’t helping in making the decision. However, Duke is incredibly expensive and BC follows right behind.

What are the benefits of each of the schools/programs? Please help!!

Echols comes with lotsa perks and prestige, but without the $$ factor, it’s hard to advise. Both UVa and BC have excellent undergrad biz programs. Duke’s Fuqua does not offer a Bachelor’s, however.

Note, one big difference is that Echols allows one to avoid UVa’s distribution requirements (GE’s) while BC’s Honors program (may?) include more Core coursework.

Stictly in terms of major mobility between science and business, these schools are very different. It is very difficult to transfer into business as a science major at BC. As mentioned prior, Duke doesn’t really even have an UG business program. UVA admits students into the business school after freshman year, so it’s easier to change majors than BC.

All three are fantastic schools, but I would eliminate BC first. Duke and UVA are regarded much higher and, from what I hear, much more enjoyable. It is very VERY difficult to transfer programs at BC- almost impossible!

When it comes down to Duke and UVA, I think your decision depends completely on preference. They are both wonderful schools, but as trizz75 said, Duke doesn’t really have undergrad business. UVA has a program that you apply to once you are already enrolled.

Personally, I would go with UVA, but Duke is also a fantastic school. You can’t go wrong with either of the two.

If you are looking for UG business, then how could you even consider Duke?

If you don’t mind studying the liberal arts in college, Duke offers stronger recruiting opportunities than McIntire at UVA and much, much stronger opportunities than BC, Honors or not. A lot of the top private schools in the country like Harvard and Princeton don’t even offer undergraduate business degrees and their graduates get the top business jobs after graduation.

If you can afford it, go to Duke. Otherwise enjoy UVA at a heavily discounted cost and all the perks that come with it. BC is a great school but should be off the list at this point.

Duke is one of the best schools in the country with a great alumni network.
