I just got off the waitlists at both Duke and Washu yesterday.,..and im super excited
except i have no clue which school I would prefer to go to right now

the thing is, i didnt like Duke's dorms, i felt like they were really small
i thought it might be too partyish, like I didnt know if there was any escape from it all

any ideas/ comments on why i should or shouldnt go to duke???

WashU has really nice dorms though they're having some issues with being able to house everyone. Keep in mind that you'll be guaranteed housing your freshman year but may be pushed off campus in the following years. I don't know what Duke's situation is like or how big of a deal that is to you, but since the dorm situation is something you bring up specifically this is probably important information.

Academically, I think they're comparable. Duke is slightly stronger than WashU but they're both among the best in the nation. Is money an issue? Has one offered you some sort of scholarship? And how do you feel about the way each school has been treating you? I hear WashU is pushy with the waitlist thing, demanding a decision in one day. How about Duke?

Just to clarify brand182's comment on WashU dorms. Last year, WashU landed up overenrolling freshman by 150 students due to a higher than expected yield . That over enrollment put pressure on upperclass housing. This year WashU decided to reduce the size of the undergraduate student body by 500. This reduction began with this years admitted class and should relieve pressure on housing availability. Traditionally, most WashU upperclassmen who want to live on campus are able to get housing and the expectation is that with the reduction in the size of this class and subsequent classes , upperclass housing will not be an issue.

Skigirl24, good luck with your decision, you have two great choices!!

Of course, you're posting on a Duke board, so you can imagine where most responses will come down. I would guess you have also posted on the WashU board, and you're likely to get different responses there.

If you just go with numbers...national rankings, average entering SAT's, number of valedictorians and National Merit Scholars, etc... Duke will come out ahead in just about every category.

That said, both are really great, nationally respected schools with lots to offer. You will get a marvelous education at either school. So, go with what your heart tells you.

Duke has guaranteed housing all four years, in response to brand's question. Also, it is required to live on Duke's campus in some form (apartments or dorms) for 3 years.
