hi, i recently got a new laptop (powerbook specifically) and i'm having some trouble using AIM on it... how can i set it so that when i close the top or put it to sleep, i don't automatically sign off AIM? I wanted to set an auto away msg or something whenever i close the top..is this possible? oh by the way, i'm using adium.

i have a question about using AIM with macs, too.

how can you make your camera (iSight) work with AIM? mine won't work, and i have no idea what i need to fix. i downloaded version 4.7, the latest for macs, but it's still being problematic.

To forward IMs to e-mail or mobile:

To send messages to people who are offline, so they will get them when they come back online:

Anyone with a mac who wants to use aim should download Fire.

It is a mac only aim client that works much better than iChat or the AOL client (you can google for it but I think it is http://fire.sf.net )

If you dont want to sign off when you close the lid, you have to adjust the power settings so it doesnt go to sleep when you close the lid. You want it to only turn off the screen and not go into full sleep mode.

thanks for your responses! but to the poster above me... if i adjust my power settings so that it never goes into full sleep mode, won't it waste a lot of battery and/or cause my laptop to severely heat up?

^yes (+char)

If the computer's asleep, you can't be on AIM. It's like being off. But I think a lot of PC laptops turn off completely when the lids are shut...kind of an unavoidable thing aobut having a laptop.

They don't typically turn completely off. They either enter suspend mode or hibernation mode. I believe suspend uses just enough electricity to keep store the data in RAM, and hibernation uses no power by writing what's in RAM to the hard drive, then restoring it when it comes out of hiberation.

EDIT: Heh, forgot to answer the question at hand. Even though they do not turn off, you are right in that when they enter suspend / hibernation they basically cease running any programs, e.g. AIM. So unless you turn off power management and let the computer stay on when you close the lid, it will have to log off AIM.

ditto on what everyone else said on closing the lid. i actually asked that question on the apple discussion board, and there's really no possible way to not have it go into hibernation when you close it unless you want to do a presentation on a larger screen, and with that you need a separate keyboard to hook up to the laptop and wake it from sleep. it sucks because i like to listen to music when i'm not on my powerbook and i hate leaving the screen up because dust collects on it. my friend has a compaq and it's able to do that, but not the powerbook. i just wind up closing it as far as it can go without it shutting down.

Well even if it didn't go to sleep, the speakers are on the inside so you wouldn't hear your music with the lid closed anyway....

well, that is true. however, i plan on buying speakers soon. it all depends.

Just get speakers that work with ipods (if you have one)

yeah, good point. i'll make sure to do that.
