Son struggled this semester with Dynamics and is thinking about retaking even if he passes (not sure he did but if he did, he still said he doesn’t understand it) - any suggestions on a really good study book / workbook / open courseware he can work over the summer? He’s googling and searching Amazon but never sure of actual reviews being from real people. Suggestions for a better understanding second time around?
MIT edX has a course in Dynamics. Go to mit.edu and you will see the link to the edX on the left. Search for dynamics and you should see the course. I haven’t tried it but the basics of dynamics is pretty standard stuff (I didn’t say easy, just standard).
Depending on his career choice, this can be a very important class to grasp the fundamentals. So a bigger question is: why did he struggle? The first couple of weeks learning the very basics is critical to understanding the whole concept. After that, it just variations on a theme type stuff. Did he see the professor and get help? Was he involved in a study group that could have helped with the fundamentals?
One of the biggest skills that one must master to be a successful engineer is to know when to ask for help. Knowing that you don’t know; and then doing something about it!!!
thank you - Yes he’s pretty good about that - class did not have a textbook, only teacher notes and he did check out another teachers textbook and went to group tutorimg but he had Thermo and DiffEQ and other eng/Phys/math class that often conflicted with the very crowded tutoring…one of the most requested on campus. He’ll study over summer and may look for private tutoring if its not clicking - just asking some advice on best study tools. He does use Open Courseware on occasion - some are better than others he said. .
@noimagination - thank you. I’ve forwarded your link to my son.
