Does anyone know when incoming freshmen will get their email addresses?

You'll get a packet telling you how to access your email account over the summer (sometime in July, I think). When you are added to the online directory, however (probably sometime in June) you'll be able to find out what the email address is.

Thanks a lot!

Fwiw, the general format for your address is likely to be flname@smith.edu, where "f" is the first letter of your first name and "lname" is your last name. There's a length at which the last name truncates but I don't know what that is.

the whole username (the part before @smith.edu) is a maximum of 8 letters. so, if nobody has the same first initial/last name combination as you, your email address will be [first initial][first 7 letters of your last name]@smith.edu but if there is someone else with a similar name, ie Jane Smith and Janet Smith, then someone will be jsmith and someone will be j[middle initial]smith. for very common initial/lastname pairings, it gets a bit more complex, because they add numbers at the end of your username. but don't worry--they'll tell you everything you need to know before they activate your email address.

So I can be relieved that no numbers will be added cos my last name is quite unique! lol
