Yale is my first choice college and I would really love the apply SCEA, but I'm using Tulane as my backup school because I'm almost positive I could get a full/half tuition scholarship. However, I have to apply EA to be eligible for the scholarships at Tulane, which means I can't apply SCEA to Yale. Is there really any advantage (other than knowing your admissions results by December) to applying EA? Other posts have been a bit contradictory, and some have even said applying EA puts you at a DISADVANTAGE because you are considered alongside a much tougher applicant pool. Can anyone clarify this?

^^Yale’s EA is Single Choice. Which makes it restrictive. To OP - SCEA does not give you any admission edge, other than knowing early. And yes, people do talk about it being a disadvantage.

In other words, only the most outstanding candidates are accepted EA, ones that would be selected from any applicant pool. IMO you should grab your backup, if you’re a strong enough candidate to get accepted EA at Y, you will be accepted RD.

You are confusing applying and deciding to attend. Y is SCEA so it is restrictive for applying. EA means it is not restrictive for your decision, you don’t have to attend if accepted.

It’s interesting, some of the subtle differences among the SCEA colleges with regard to issues like this. Stanford would clearly permit a simultaneous EA application to Tulane for scholarship-qualification purposes; Yale, Harvard, and Princeton do not.

You can apply to both without any trouble. Yale allows EA applications to other schools if such an application is necessary to be considered for special scholarship programs.

There probably is no disadvantage applying SCEA to Yale since they defer half of the applicants to the RD round. Stanford, OTOH, really tries to give a firm early decision and that may make them reject marginal candidates who might look more promising in the context of the RD round.

^ Just to clarify, I was referring to a disadvantage in acceptance to Yale by applying SCEA. As far as scholarships or ED acceptances elsewhere, choosing Yale SCEA may take away those opportunities. This also assumes an outstanding record through junior year since those thinking first semester senior year grades will strengthen their application should definitely wait for the RD round.
