hmmm, son almost missed it when he got it, i think it had a heading like… “take the next step” and it came from rhodes. maybe have her do a search of email for anything from rhodes.

Curmudgeon and others discussed in previous Rhodes threads the stats for those higher level scholarships and they were phenomenal students. My daughter got the Presidential with 35 ACT, 3.87 GPA, National Hispanic Scholar, lots of service hours, yrbook editor, really good essays, and no need according to EFC. I think the offer they made seems fair for her stats- it certainly made it an option - it wasn’t enough to seal the deal though!

thanks manymile,

Just checked Bannerweb!

Was offered 17k per year with the Hon Scholarship and an additional 3.5k per year with the Rhodes Grant, totaling an annual 20.5k.

Is this a tentative award package or should we keep our fingers crossed for more?
Rhodes is really expensive…

btw are the grants renewable or only for the first year?

I would assume that grants are renewable.

I love Rhodes, but I wish they were more transparent regarding financial aid & their scholarships/fellowships, as there are quite a few which are mentioned by name only.

i’m assuming the financial aid letter should arrive shortly and will explain it all. not being whiny as anything given for merit is truly a gift… if the grant is renewable that will help. different scholarship than juniper mellow but total about the same as grant was 6.5K

I checked my BW account, and I was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship (26k). I’m pretty happy. yay.

kiterunner - that seems like a well deserved award as well - you were a really good candidate. Congratulations! I am really impressed with the obvious thought that went into these gifts - they seem very predictable with the range of stats I’ve seen compared to some other universitys that seem more random. I sure was hoping these were renewable too!

Does anyone know if the academic scholarships can be stacked with the CODA or music performance scholarships?

Congrats to all who have won merit awards! DD received Presidential and Rhodes grant and she is very honored to have received it.
This is a fine group of young men and women with wonderful things to offer and I’m glad to see Rhodes has recognized this talent. Good luck to all!

I don’t think it’s Rhodes trying to be shady about FA; it’s more likely because, as a private school, Rhodes gets so many private scholarships from so many varied sources that there is a wide range of stipulations about the eligibility of the students receiving each. It’s just easier for FA to sort all that out for us. In my experience, FA has done a great job matching students up with as much scholarship money as they can award without being unfair. And I say that as someone paying for college entirely on my own without the help of my parents.

I know the CODA specifically states that it will replace other academic scholarships.

BW told us that DD has been awarded a $12,500 Rhodes Award. We’re unbelievably grateful, considering our EFC is (ridiculously) high. She’s also applied for CODA, so (fingers crossed…) that can make Rhodes financially doable! :)

@ schnp
That is true. I suppose I was just looking for a bit more of an explanation about what scholarships are awarded for, like many on this thread who are trying to figure out academic $$ levels!
(my parents aren’t going to be contributing towards the cost of my college education either-- do you have any tips or suggestions on what not to do regarding the financial aid process?)

^ Thanks, manyamile!

Does anyone know the answer to the combination question? I was considering applying for another scholarship.

I also have another question. In the FA notification - what loans come from the information provided in the FAFSA, and what loans come from the CSS Profile Information? I have a VERY low EFC and even with the scholarship and loans, it’s not as high as I expected. I don’t know. I feel like something wasn’t received…

If what you got is lower than you expected, give FA a call. They’re really friendly and are great about answering questions you have about your package.

looks like the grants are renewable:
GRANTS
Rhodes Grant: Students may receive a Rhodes Grant along with other forms of assistance such as competitive scholarships/fellowships, student loans, and work study. Rhodes Grants are not always need-based. Rhodes uses this funding to meet need and/or to offer assistance based on the overall characteristics of students who show promise of success at Rhodes and who show the ability and desire to take full advantage of all Rhodes has to offer. The annual value of a student’s Rhodes Grant remains constant throughout the student’s tenure at Rhodes. Exceptions to this are within the purview of the Financial Aid Office in response to extreme increases in demonstrated financial need

Very detailed info about FA and each type of award can be found in the Rhodes college catalogue on the site. I think it is under the Academics tab, then click college catalogue, then a .pdf of each year is listed. Inside you’ll find pretty much everything to answer your questions.
