EA Decisions (for Internationals too)?

Hello there,

I was wondering if anybody knew when early action decisions will be coming out. Caltech said they will be sent out by December 15th on their website, but I've noticed that - over the years - most decisions have been e-mailed on December 12th at noon Eastern Time (judging by CC posts).

Is this a reliable pattern? Will it hold for international students (like myself) too this year? I see no reason why it shouldn't if it's by e-mail, but us internationals are subject to different rules a lot of the time.

On a somewhat separate note, I had received an e-mail from Caltech a month or so back (after submitting my EA) saying that I had no missing materials. However, I got an e-mail last Wednesday saying I still had to send a certain financial aid form within a day (even though I indicated that I do not require financial aid, the form apparently has to be sent in by all international applicants). I didn't know this form had to be sent as it wasn't mentioned elsewhere, but I got it in through fax and e-mail (to be doubly safe!) the very next day (which was ASAP considering 8 hour time differences). Caltech acknowledged that it has been received.

However, I find it a bit odd that they're still deliberating on my decision, especially as I submitted my supplement by October 20 or so (I sent research materials slightly later but before November 1, but that was it). Is the late submission of this form sufficient grounds for deferring my decision, so they can fully consider it in March (instead of rushing right now)? Is it likely that my decision will be deferred purely since it's being considered so late? As I understand it, deferral doesn't work like this. But then again, I am an international student.

Thank you for your time.

As long as your application (and not the financial aid form) was in on time, you should receive the appropriate decision on the day that decisions (for internationals) are released. It doesn’t matter if you applied the day that the Caltech supplement was available… decision date remains the same as it is not a rolling admissions school.

Does that answer your question(s)?

Thanks for your help. Your response answers my second question, but not my first one (fully).

I know this can’t exactly be predicted, but is it likely that decisions will in fact come out on December 12 at noon EST (instead of December 15) as they have over the past few years? I just wanted to know if I should expect some sort of decision notification by e-mail that day. It also would be useful to know so I can discuss things further with my parents or counselor. Does anyone have an idea about this?

And yes, I did submit everything on time, so that’s good to know.

It’s probably just a coincidence that decisions have come out exactly on December 12 for the past couple of years. I would not be surprised if decision day was before December 15 though, since colleges often post on their website the latest possible day they will release decisions.

oh, and I’m pretty sure they alert everyone at the same time. The year I applied decisions came through the mail, and some international students actually heard back before domestic applicants because their decisions if they were admitted were mailed via FedEx (I think it was one-day shipping or something crazy like that).
