Ea/ed?

I have a couple questions on this confusing subject… My top two schools right now are Davidson College and UNC-Chapel Hill (In-State). I believe I have a good shot at being accepted at both colleges, but the EA/ED situation is quite a hassle.

I have heard that I can apply to both schools early, since Davidson is ED and UNC is EA (or Early Notification). However, if I get accepted at Davidson before I get accepted at UNC, do I need to attend Davidson?

And if I get accepted ED at Davidson, what if the financial plan is not what I expect? Do I still have to attend? My parents will not pay for my college tuition, and they make a good 80-100k a year combined. However, I do plan to apply for outside scholarships.

Thanks!

1) If you do get accepted to Davidson you will have to go there. Sorry but that's the manner of Early Decision.
2) You can always appeal to the financial aid department at the school. But the recommendation is normally that if financial aid is a problem dont apply ED.

Overall: I would suggest not applying ED to Davidson. Just apply regularly. This way you wont be stuck with going there and you can compare financial aid packages with UNC.

1) I am assuming ED is binding at Davidson. If this is the case, you are required to attend Davidson even if you are accepted after you are accepted to UNC. If accepted at all to Davidson, you MUST attend.

2) If you are not financially secure with your ability to pay for Davidson, do not apply early decision. Even if they don't give you the money you expected, you are still required to attend.

Thanks Karen for your suggestion, but I have heard that applying early at Davidson (or any LAC) shows commitment - thus allowing me to be accepted easier.

If you really, really want to go to Davidson, then apply early. Don't base it on how 'easily' you will be accepted if it is not where you really want to go. It sounds to me like you are still up in the air between UNC and Davidson, though. Don't strap yourself into something you are going to hate yourself for later.
