EA: so many questions!

I've really got to get on the ball with this whole application process, so here goes:

Will being deferred EA hurt chances of getting admitted RD?

Will applying EA at two colleges (Caltech & MIT) hurt chances, or should I only apply at one? (I have a feeling I'll either be accepted or deferred; I'd just like to get this admissions process over with ASAP).

I took the October 9 SAT I: will my scores be seen if I apply EA? (I've already sent ACT and SAT II scores; I find out SAT I scores on Oct. 28).

What is the purpose of EA, if not to find out earlier? More sure of college choice or what?

...

Thanks for your thoughtful answers!

1) Nope.

2) Apply to both.

3) Yes.

4) Just to find out earlier.

I second all the opinions above

Agreed with NewAccount on 1-3.

I actually agree on #4 as well, but thought I’d expand. It is a finding out earlier thing. Some people are prepared to apply then, so there’s no point in waiting. Others will apply to only one or two schools EA, get in where they want, and not bother filling out/paying for bunches of applications to schools they weren’t as excited about. Those might be factors for you, they might not be :)

I concur with the opinions above – just want to expand a bit.

Being deferred EA at MIT has no impact, positive or negative, on your likelihood of admission by itself. It is advantageous in the sense that you have a chance to reflect on your application’s strengths and weaknesses during the months of November and December, and could potentially send helpful supplemental material in January. It is disadvantageous if your application is not actually ready to go by November 1 and you send an application that’s not your best.

Note that these are advantages and disadvantages on your side, not on MIT’s. MIT will re-read your application for RD as if you were an RD applicant. Typically, about the same number of EA applicants are admitted RD after being deferred as are admitted during EA.

Thanks everyone!

Those were all fantastic replies and I now feel like I know what I’m doing more.

Feel free to not reply to this thread at all now.
