@OHMomof2 I applied to a science major from nc. Does ethnicity play a deal? What does that exactly mean???

woohooooooo…applied to NEU early action and today morning i got my acceptance !!! for those wondering about the admission notification, you ll get a mail from Northeastern that your decision has been made.Just login to the application status check portal and enter your NU ID and birthdate …btw do reply if you got admitted …BEST OF LUCK GUYS :DDD

@ivyhopefulebound - I don’t have any special knowledge, just speculating based on what’s been reported here and elsewhere. I have no idea what majors or colleges might be most difficult to get into or what the institutional needs of NEU are, or the institutional needs of each college within NEU, for that matter.

It seems that kids who come from high schools where a ton of kids apply - especially if they use NEU as a safety - are going to have a tough go of it, as are those who haven’t visited. I imagine NEU would like broad geographic and racial distribution just as most selective schools do, though I see highly qualified URM students deferred here too.

But I don’t KNOW anything, just looking at the results and making some guesses.

Deferred.
32 ACT, 2190 SAT, GPA 3.8 UW 4.68 W, on student council, volunteer work abroad, nationally recognized for video, 3 sports for school as well as drama productions and many clubs. Was surprised.

I retook the act this weekend so hopefull I got a 30+ but my stars are 4.6 W and 29 super scored act. I think I have decent EC and I think my essay was good. But deferred. Hoping to get in rd. I did visit.

My 2 cents about Honors as a senior in the honors program: I don’t think it’s that huge of a deal one way or the other. It means nicer dorms freshman year, a few smaller intro classes (which I mostly placed out of anyway with IB), guaranteed Presidential Global Scholarship for international co-op, and some other perks. But a lot of things, like doing an honors thesis or getting the international co-op scholarship, are not limited to Honors students. It’s a nice perk, but I don’t think it should be make-or-break in your decision whether or not to go to Northeastern. Plus, you can also join honors after your first or second semester if you do well (see this: http://www.northeastern.edu/honors/prospective-students/joining-once-you-are-here/).

As for why you might not have gotten into Honors? It could be any number of things. My best friend/roommate found out during her freshman year that the only reason she didn’t get into honors was because of a less-than-great letter of recommendation from her guidance counselor (who didn’t like her, for no apparent reason).

My son was accepted…basic stats are 2070 SAT, 34 ACT, 3.9/4.5 (UW/W), top 2% of his class, solid ECs. Rec’d Honors w/some merit money (sorry, I forget which designation).

@nanotechnology - when D and I toured NEU we didn’t even see the honors dorms, they were fairly far away, off the tour route. Our tour guide said a lot of honors kids chose not to live in them for that reason?

Honors kids are all living in IV together for the first year. It’s not that far off from the main campus to be honest - maybe 5 minutes through Ruggles will get you to the other side

*DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I COULD TAKE THE FEBRUARY ACT AND HAVE MY SCORES IN TO NORTHEASTERN ON TIME?

call admissions and ask…

I applied to the college of science, but got accepted into the general studies program
still super excited !!!
3.94 weighted GPA
1820 SAT
strong extracurriculars in field of study
letters of rec from teachers, city councilman, and principal of school i volunteered at
2 APs ( junior year) 3 APs (senior)
My school history/ grades aren’t as extensive as other, but I go to a small private school - i made the most of what I could - in the top 20% of my class
My school doesn’t offer many intensive science courses, which is unfortunate for my major (behavioral neuroscience) so i don’t know if that had any thing to do with the GSP

Re: Honors dorms…it is mandatory to live in Honors dorms if you want to be in the Honors program freshman year. You can’t opt out without opting out of Honors. The tour guides are generally told to say those types of things so as to appease kids who aren’t admitted into Honors…it’s not far off at all, maybe 3 minute walk from the tour route. I believe it’s the only air conditioned freshman dorm, the only residence hall on campus with it’s own gym, and contains a dining hall (I think it’s the best dining hall, but others might say it’s #2). Biggest bonus by far is the suite-style rooms meaning I share a shower with 3 friends in my own bathroom, instead of 30 at the end of the hall.

I received the Dean’s scholarship in the College of Science. If I request a major change now, before officially enrolling, will the scholarship be rescinded?

Deferred from New York

2000 SAT
3.7 Unweighted GPA
4.0+ Weighted GPA
A bunch of AP’s, Great EC’s, Tons of Community Service Hours, and my school college counselor told me that my essay was amazing, plus I’m black so I was kinda hoping that would help

Honestly was a little bit surprised but seeing that a lot of people were deferred I wouldnt be too discouraged if you were deferred as well. A lot of people in here are clearly qualified and will probably get in RD. Congrats to those who were accepted!

Accepted !! Deans Scholarship (Without Honors Program). Does anyone know if students get bumped up to Honors program as you get closer to admission?

@sk2000 Dean’s Scholarship is top 25% of applicants school wide I believe, Honors is top 10% of each college. There is often overlap, but sometimes there is not. You are probably just in a more competitive major/college. I wouldn’t expect to be bumped up, but you can transfer into the program while at NU.

@pepper03: Aside from the top 10 schools all schools are backups to one extent or another. Cornell is a backup for HYP hopefuls. Georgetown is a backup for Notre Dame hopefuls etc. Right now I see Northeastern as a backup for Cornell, Georgetown, Carnegie Mellon etc.

Note that I use the word backup and not safety. The results on this thread show that Northeastern is not really a safety for anyone.

Northeastern does not care about yield protection but rather retention. They are trying to enroll 2800 students who like the unique features of Northeastern, most notably experiential learning. These are students who are not going to try and “transfer up” to top 25 schools. They have a 96% freshman retention rate and that is excellent.

Remember that admissions is HOLISTIC. It is not all about GPA and SAT/ACT.

BTW, the 2014 enrolled freshman stats are significantly higher than BU and slightly higher than BC.

@TomSrOfBoston You’re right. Northeastern was my backup for Penn and I was positive I was getting in but the selectivity realllly increased this year

@TomSrOfBoston well put. Very interesting about BU and BC! It makes sense to me because I believe experiential leaning yields jobs at graduation. Be interesting to see if there is data proving this.
