After seeing how many people got aid…I’m kind of surprised I didn’t get any. Someone from my school with similar stats got a full ride…does this mean I’m not a competitive applicant? This all seems very random.

@Qwerty568 I feel suspicious of those people who say they got a full ride. Someone in my school also claimed that but when I asked him he just said that it was because of financial aid, he only got a 12k scholarship. He had a Facebook status about the “full ride” and the huge amount of FA is great but I thought it was so misleading.

Just an FYI - no one at Northeastern gets a full ride on merit money - most you will get is full tuition (Scholars Program) - Room and board, fees, etc will still cost about $16000 a year. Need based aid can be higher but merit money will only go towards tuition.

Being a sore “loser” is not good. .

@brethrenz - You’re DEFINITELY going to get in! I got in with stats similar to yours (32 ACT score, 9 APs,Varsity soccer captain, science and math activities, hispanic female going into science). So now you just have to wait a little longer to get an acceptance letter. I’m pretty positive you’ll get in though

@TomSrOfBoston I wonder if this attitude comes across in the application.

Also anyone who has and ED acceptance should have withdrawn their app to NEU.

I think the ED option is the way the school is going and I am not surprised by all the deferrals-but it’s not like no high stats kids were accepted. It’s a tough process and I hope the school can move to ED so kids that really want to go here can get that nod.

I am sorry though it is very normal to be upset I went through this four years ago and I am going through it again. My child didn’t even bother applying four years ago she would have gotten in with $$ based on what happened four years ago at her school-this year her only shot would have been ED (that is only my opinion) but what I am seeing here bears that out.

I feel for you if this is the school you really want. It is well known this is used as a safety school though-so while I can understand that being upsetting most of you will do very well and get into the school you really do want to attend.

It’s a business everywhere-I do not doubt one minute that every school practices yield protection and every school markets and is driven to some extent by the rankings. Maybe not every school but I believe almost all of them do.

It’s hard to see kids so upset. I know based on prior experience every one of you will find the right school for you and this is the unfortunate and painful part of the process.

How much of 50,000 is merit??

National debate champion & Captain of Lacross team & lots of other amazing achievements + 1990 SAT 3.7 GPA
-Deferred -_-

Still super sad u got deferred. How should I make myself stand out more in RD since it seems like there are LOTS of strong applicants in RD??

What may be going on here has to do with what major/college/program was applied to, along with geography, interest and the rest of the ever-mysterious holistic admission process.

It’s interesting to see some kids invited to honors with a scholarship of say $12K, and other kids given $20K but not invited to honors. That makes me think the criteria for merit and honors are not quite the same, which is a little different from some other schools. It seems to also be true that scores and GPA are just one piece of the puzzle.

It may be that NEU is moving in the direction of the top 20 or so, where everyone finds the admissions process confusing because numbers don’t drive the process anymore.

Does anyone know how they are working cut off grades or criteria for scholarships? Is it worth paying the $12 sending in a 33/11 ACT over a 32/10? Engineering, chemical.

I think it’s a combination of yield (weeding out those who are using it as a safety) and school-by-school requirements.

@Alfonsia see post #954. Any improvement in scores or activities may help those who were Deferred get in but I think they are done with those who were Accepted…

@alfonsia if you were accepted, probably not, per above. But if you were deferred, I would say the $12 is worth it b/c you are looking for thousands or tens of thousands in scholarships by submitting. That’s a pretty good return on $12 (there’s your first college lesson in return on investment…).

@Pepper03 You said “It is well known this is used as a safety school though-”… I would say those days are now over. NU really has its act together. It is on par with BU and RPI and it is nipping at the heals of BC, NYU, and Case to name a few. It is arguably in as good or better location than all of these as well. And I must say that admissions did an amazing job with the visitor tour we were on… both the presentation and the tours were better than anything we’ve seen at other schools. I think, as you said Pep, moving to ED from EA will continue the trend toward NU being peoples’ first choice more often. IMHO
