Early Action Numbers

I received an email from Tech that said they received 11600 applications in the early action round. Last year it was 123000 so it looks like there was a slight dip in the number of applicants. About half of the applications were filed in the last three days before the Oct. 15 deadline.

I thought everyone would appreciate knowing some of the numbers. Last year they accepted 40% of applicants EA and I imagine that number will be the same if not slightly higher since Tech received less EA applicants.

Good luck to everyone.

Thank you very much!

I would think it might be at or slightly lower rate than last year. The reason is that they had more admitted kids attend this fall than they thought would. I believe housing was over loaded and some kids ended up in dorm rooms that weren’t really dorm rooms(I think they used study rooms in the dorms for the overflow).

Don’t forget that last year the deadline was extended to October 21 because of common app problems. My daughter was one of those applying after the 15th and before the new deadline and there she is at Tech!

I expect many schools to show a decrease in apps this year due precisely to the point made by Stilltay above (especially Common App schools). With the extended deadlines all over the place, pretty much everyone who intended to apply was able to get their app in. The extended deadlines allowed all the last minute kids to add schools and still have time to fill out supplements for those schools. Usually, the last minute kids barely get the work done to finish their intended apps. Last year was unique in that even the procrastinators got to max out the number of apps submitted.

I will add that I think the tech problems of the Common App last year were largely a red herring excuse for schools to extend their deadlines to max out on apps. The tech problems were real, but known pretty far in advance. Although the extensions were taken advantage of by students, in many cases they were not really needed.
