Hello everyone! I know chancing a sophomore is a bit early, but I want to get a feel as to where I'm at and how should I improve. I'm aiming high, and unfortunately, it wasn't until late my sophomore year that I realized that I'm lacking a lot in my ECs. If any ideas, I'd love to hear them! Thanks :)

ECs (this is where it gets bad...):

-Playing Piano since I was seven (I think I've gone to districts for eight years in a row and have been qualified for the state competition for those eight years...)
-Community Service Officer of the Chinese Club this year (member for two years, trying out for VP next year); also in National Chinese Honor Society
-Member of the Animal Care Club
-Volunteering at my local animal shelter four times a week for an hour (started last month but I'm determined to continue this for the rest of my high school year)
I will be starting a Creative Writing Club though. Also, I'm looking at part-time job opportunities and more volunteer opportunities for my summer.

I know how impatient you are, and I know how you really want to get a head start and learn more about college- I was there. but this is way to early for a chance thread. come back at the end of junior year or beginning of senior year

Just keep working hard. My D has similar sophomore PSAT score and she did a lot better in Junior year. You should be able to become match for all these schools if you can get also get 10-15% higher in SAT by next year.

@stressedouttt: I know it’s early for a chance thread, but I just wanted to know where I’m at and if the colleges I’m interested in are in my capability. Also, I want to know how to improve my chances as well. If I were to post this thread at the end of junior/senior year wouldn’t there be less time to do something? My school really pressures us to look at colleges early. Earlier in my year my school even took my entire grade on a college visiting field trip.

@Catria & billcsho: Thank you so much for posting! I’ll try to work hard in improving my scores and chances.

well, you generally look like you’re in good shape, besides the SAT score. but a lot changes in 2 years, be it for better or for worse. expect the unexpected

Hi! I’m thinking of applying to similar colleges, but wow… your GPA is impressive.

I’m a junior, have also taken APUSH, AP Lang, AP Bio, AP Calc BC, and am in the Writing Center. You’re like a little me!

I founded the National English Honor Society at my school, if you’re thinking of founding a Creative Writing Club, make it sound really prestigious lol since you’re probably going to be prez. Try to take up an internship at a magazine since you seem to be interested in language arts.

But remember, the SAT is a big deal. PSATs are an accurate reflection of where you stand, and I recommend you take a LOT of mocks to get that score up. You’ll need, at least, something above 2150 to be considered by these universities.

I’d say UCD likely, NCSU for sure, OSU for sure, UF likely, and UPenn/Cornell are high reaches. But I’m sure that if you get your SAT/ECs up you’ll have a great chance!! :)
