It's not surprising to me at all that EA numbers would be up due to the number of students in the high school class of 2009. EA is not binding so why not apply and compare your options in this uncertain financial environment. However, ED is another situation altogether, which requires signing a binding agreement. I find the numbers for ED so far very interesting and surprising. Many of the increases are 10% and more! A need for certainty in uncertain times??? Can't begin to figure it out.

Wouldn't we expect some rise just given the larger size of the enrolling class overall? Obviously there are other moderating variables but I would assume some increase happens anytime the cohort is larger...(stats are not my strength though...this is just an general question about what underlies any patterns..)

yes, mmaah, I think you are correct. This year's class is supposed to be the peak, so holding all other variables constant, one would expect an across-the-board increase in ED, EA and RD applications.

The "new" variable that is of interest on this thread is how the downturn in the economy will affect these numbers, up or down. All sorts of theories abound, but its appearing so far that for this group largely composed of highly selective private schools, a net loss of applicants due to economic downturn is not overwhelming the demographic trend, at least in general thus far for early application programs.

jury still out on Penn
from an article today, quoting Furda, Penn's admissions dean:
[quote]
And while it's too early to see if the economy has an impact on the number of applicants, Furda emphasized that his office is focused on the yield.

As of November 14, Williams had 563 ED applications. They expect that number to increase to around 580. That's a slight decline from last year's 602 ED applications.

The size of the graduating class is the largest, but nothing like 10% larger as the class of '12 was very close in size. Clearly kids are applying to more schools so yield is going to be the issue.

wow, arcadia, good spot...I perused Williams' electronic news this am, but that article on ED does't appear there, apparently, & only appears on the paper-copy image.

So, by those prelimary numbers, Williams projects to be down 3.7% (100% - 580/602), 6.5% down thus far.

University of Washington: so far apps (don't know which type) up 20%
