Hi, I'm a senior this year, and two of my top choices for college are UPenn and Yale. I have a legacy advantage at both. From what I've researched, I think I'd prefer Yale. However, I attended a 3-week summer program at Penn, and I've never been to Yale. I definitely know I like Penn and can see myself going there, but I don't know about Yale. I'll apply to both, but I don't know which one I want to apply to early. Should I go ahead and pick Yale because it's my dream school, or Penn (2nd dream school) because I KNOW I'd be happy there? Does it even matter which I apply to for early decision? Obviously getting into either school at all would be a huge achievement, and I have no idea what my chances are... but I'm hopeful :)

Well if Penn accepts you under ED, you’re bound and are prohibited from applying to Yale.

Also, you can only apply early to one or the other, as Yale is Single Choice Early Action. For “free choice” Early Action schools, you can apply to them as well as Penn ED (although you have to turn down their offers/withdraw your applications if you get into Penn).

If you’re having qualms about which school to attend, then Early Decision probably isn’t for you. I would suggest applying to Yale SCEA (as it is non-binding) and Penn RD. Ultimately though, you’re going to have to figure out where it is you really want to be.
