I am a current highschool junior and am looking to apply early action/decision to yale or upenn.
It's sort of said but my decision will most likely be made off of my chances in getting in to either school. I have visited and fell and love with both, but i am leaning towards yale at the moment.
My stats are as follows
Race: African American
ACT: 31 writing 11
GPA: 4.01 weighted 3.85 unweighted (hardest private school in the region)
Activities: Student Council President (4 years) Soccer and Track Captain (3 years) Yearbook (2 years) Intensive biomedical science program at local university (4 years) Mock Trial (5 years) Various Leadership Programs (3 years)
National Merit Finalist
My goal is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon but i do not want to drown my self in science all of college so i want to major in mathematics while taking the pre med requirements.
If someone could comment on the positive and negatives of both schools and my chances of getting in, please let me know. Thanks!

You should do SCEA to Yale because it seems like you are not sure that Penn is your first choice. You should only do binding early decision to a school if it is 100% your first choice and you know that you will not regret it if you get in. Also Yale’s SCEA acceptance rate is a lot higher than the regular acceptance rate (even though it’s nonbinding), but if you do that, you can only apply early to schools with rolling deadlines (state schools).

Yes, that seems like a realistic decision, but i am not really comfortable with my chances at either school. I think i have about a 50% chance of acceptance with ED Penn, but if i apply regular decision i am positive it will slip waaaayyy down. I am willing to take a risk on yale, but there has been no profound reason to give up a better chance of admittance to an almost equal school besides the fact that it is Yale. :)

bottom line, i feel like Penn is a great school and i would be lucky to get in. I feel somewhat selfish/greedy for setting my sights on yale lol

I would take the ACTs one more time too, i’m not saying that a 31 is bad b/c it is certainly an accomplishment but a 32/33 would lock you in so test scores wouldn’t detract from your app.

As a URM NM Finalist I think your in at both schools. Your just going to have to decide which on you want to go to…

That is a decision that seems almost harder than getting into both schools. I am really curious about the Penn environment. While the campus seemed pretty much friendly, i got the feel that there is a prevalent population of the alpha male type, which i hate! Yale seemed a little more laid back and cool. Also, which would be better in preparing me and getting me into a top medical schools like Columbia/Yale/or Penn if i love it ? And i just signed up for the next act sitting. I HATE STANDARDIZED TESTS! lol

Before you apply ED to a school, you should always ask yourself this one question: Would you choose to attend that school if you were accepted to every school in the world?

Maybe you should visit them both again and do both more research on both schools. Also, what qualities are you looking for in a college? What do you want to do with your life? How will going to college help you attain those goals? That should help you decide which school you like better.

I would say if you are looking to go to medical school, you can’t go wrong with either. Penn’s medical school which is ranked in the top three along with Harvard and Hopkins is right next to the quad.

If you are looking to become a doctor, Yale’s med school acceptance rate is much higher than Penn’s.

thanks, this is helping.
These are the things that i want in a school:
City
A place were achieving and standing out is possible
Cool, accepting students and community
Sort of traditional college feel/united student body
Spirit
Prestige
…And the winner is…!!!
which place fits that description the most? when i visited each had some of the things, but i would not know because i do not go to either.

City: Penn obviously wins this one because it’s in Philly while Yale is in New Haven.

A place were achieving and standing out is possible: It’s going to be pretty hard to stand out at either school considering how amazing all the students at both schools are. However, I’d have to pick Yale for this one because it’s a lot smaller in terms of it’s undergraduate school size.

Cool, accepting students and community: Both are very cool places to go for college.

Sort of traditional college feel/united student body: Yale (Penn isn’t as traditionally especially since it’s in the city)

Spirit: Yale’s school spirit is amazing. Go Bulldogs!

Prestige: Yale wins for general prestige. Penn wins for prestige for med and business.

Now you have to figure out which of these qualities are the most important to you. Good luck! :)

If you’re a junior, you are not eligible for NM yet… you cannot be a finalist this year

i am extremely positive i will be though, the last kid from my school made it with a 210 or something like that and i got 224

It differs from state to state. It doesn’t fluctuate very significantly, so you probably qualify. It’s a safe bet.

As a URM and National Merit Scholar, you’re a very enticing candidate - but your standardized test scores are JUST below the averages at both Penn and Yale.

My advice to you: take the SATs! You did very well on the PSAT, and presumably if you studied you could score around a 2200 - probably even higher. This would nail down your chances at Penn and Yale, as far as I’m concerned. You have several months. Bite the bullet and study.

Don’t make any decisions yet. I would let time pass a little, visit both again in the fall and try some new things, then go from there.

i’ve decided, ed penn is the way to go!!!:)

Congrats But either way you can’t go wrong. Mmm Penn lovin’

We’re happy to have you!
