Early Decision - FAFSA Impact on FA?

When ED kids applied, we used the CSS Profile for our financial aid packages. These packages both used the 2009-2010 tuition/fees and were said subject to change in later months. I now understand that financial aid can be tweaked for ED kids later in the year - the FA rep we spoke to said this happens in May.

When we got our package in December, it said EFC was $17,200. Our FAFSA now says it is around $8000 (which is a lot more reasonable to what we could do). When packages are reexamined in May, will they simply be adjusting for the rise in tuition, or will they actually consider offering us more aid to fit our FAFSA EFC more appropriately? If they don't, is it worth appealing at this point in time, citing the FAFSA results, or would it be too late?

Quite seriously, do you realize how fortunate you are that you might be able to attend a school like Northwestern for 8k?

Also, this question is somewhat unrelated and maybe a little stupid, but under “Student’s Grant and Scholarship Aid Reported in AGI:” it currently reads $0. I guess I’m just a little confused about this in general. I have a grant from NU for aid…should that be corrected and added on there, or are they asking for something else (outside aid only, etc)?

Oh, gods, yes. If I could attend for 8k/year flat out (I do have $3.5k in federal loans at this point) I would probably die happy. As I currently sit looking at $17k in straight funds and think about the debt it could amass, I am rather terrified. I completely and utterly could not be more fortunate if our EFC were truly 8k. =)

No parental contribution?

But anyway, Northwestern is a great school. Even paying full freight.

Parental contribution yes, but we could probably only reasonably do a fraction of $17k without loans at this point in time. So, I suppose $17k flat is extreme, but with what I suspect will be around $5k in federal loans already there per year, it doesn’t always look too pretty!

And I agree! Obviously, I went ED, so I’m completely in love with NU. I’ve been ready to take on the debt burden to attend, but if it could be lessened a bit, it would be that much less stress about the whole thing!
