A friend and I are both applying to Northwestern early decision, but will they compare our application to each other? Do they tend to only accept one person in a high school??

With the caveat that i am NOT an AdCom…but I am working on my 3rd admission :)

I don’t think it matters how many from a HS - there ae so many variables between students. You did not mention it, but even though you are both considering ED, there can still be a big range in scores, ECs etc.

And of course different kids have different intersts. My D and 1 other guy got in from her school - the only thing they had in common was good scores. He was a Student Gov / Econ Guy, and my D was a Varsity Player with an interest in engineering.

However, If you are REALLY worried, just sign your friend up for Harvard, Princeton, Yale or your Local Community college! :)

Good Luck

Northwestern claims that there isn’t a quota per HS – that some schools get multiples and others don’t have any – that’s just the way it goes.

Every school says that they don’t have school quotas, when in actuality they do. Stanford isn’t going to accept more than a handful of applicants from a given school even if they are all more than qualified. It’s just one of those things schools say in order to people at ease, but it’s just not true. Same goes for those who say race isn’t a factor. That’s a flat out lie and everyone knows it.

Northwestern traditionally has accepted 5-6 students from my son’s Chicago-area high school each year (but only two last year due to increased competition). You and your friend applying should be fine, as long as you’re in the top 10 of your graduating class or have other noteworthy skills or accomplishments. The big challenge is not your fellow high school classmates, it’s standing out from the other top 10,000 qualified applicants.

Actually, Stanford took 10+ kids from a private school in San Francisco last year. I had heard 15 but when I looked it up, in was a mere 10 :)…so depressing when only 1 kids was accepted from our public high school.

Northwestern took 3 kids from our (greater Chicagoland, but not North Shore) high school early decision. The three kids had very different general interests and profiles. And they have made it very clear they don’t have quotas by high schools. I suppose you can choose to believe they are a bunch of lying liars but that begs the question as to why you’d want to go there.
