early decision v. regular decision

does anyone know if there is a significant advantage to applying early at columbia versus applying regualr decision? I know most colleges claim that there isn't much of a difference and the early decision pool is just stronger.
any stats on acceptance rates for early decision versus regular decision? Would it be better to apply regular decision if i'm taking a challenging courseload senior year and want to impress admissions with grades in such couses?

ED/EA rate at all ivies = 20%+

RD admit rate at Harvard, Yale, Columbia (College), Princeton = ~6%

If you're a legacy, then apply ED, in RD your legacy advantage seems to lessen.

Otherwise, the kids who get in ED could very well have gotten in RD.

i'm not so sure if that's true. The year in which I applied (dec 2001 for entry in fall 02 for class of 06), the stats out there showed that there was a 60% ED admit rate for SEAS. I'm not kidding, 60%. That plummeted during my time at the school, but that doesn't mean there isn't still a sizeable statistical advantage to applying early.

would it be really stupid to apply early to columbia if you have a parent that went to another ivy?

it would be really stupid to apply ED to any school that you weren't convinced was a perfect fit for you and was your #1 choice. don't try to "game" the percentages system. Instead, find a good fit, and you'll make a pretty compelling case to an admissions committee.

haha yeah you're right.
