Early decision/withdrawing other apps?

(I'm a junior, so I haven't actually applied anywhere yet.)

I want to apply to two colleges, a private school early decision and a state school. I know early decision is binding and you have to withdraw your other applications if you're accepted, but I know you can also get out of the early decision contract if you can't afford to attend the school, so do you have to withdraw your other apps in that case?
(That is, could I apply early decision somewhere and then get out of it for financial reasons without withdrawing my application at the school I know I can afford?)

If you can’t afford the ED school then you can leave your apps in place.

“you have to withdraw your other applications if you’re accepted”

When asking for ED financial aid, you have to withdraw your other applications when you accept the ED financial aid offer.

You do not have to withdraw apps to other schools if you do not get in ED or if the financial aid at an ED school you are accepted does not work out for you (and are then released from your commitment).
