BW referred to their fall auditions as ‘early decision’ but I got the impression that the ‘decision’ part was theirs.

Re: Post #20:
It’s kinda too bad if they used the term “early decision,” because that has a definition that is universal in college admissions, and yet they are not really using Early Decision. It sounds more like Early Action.

@tramsmom - Northwestern certainly has a unique and, based on it’s long standing tradition of graduating successful performers, highly effective system. While I’m sure kids occasionally switch majors (much as kids sometimes transfer out of BFA programs) it is in no sense a cut program, and virtually every admitted student graduates NU. MT Certificate auditions are held in early December of freshman year so not all admitted students will (or want to) pursue the Certificate. Keep in mind that the 100 admitted Theatre students include MTs, straight actors, directors, stage managers, producers, writers, etc. so not all are interested in MT. However, as I understand it, all theatre students can enroll in virtually any class, so those who are motivated can get great dance and voice training even without the MT Certificate.

As to “artistic hurdles” yes, there are many after admission - the vast majority are quarterly auditions for the 60+ shows on campus every year. Artistic hurdles (aka auditions) are, in fact, the cornerstone of most working actor’s lives, so I’d think that encountering lots of them in school is a vital learning experience.

NU admits holistically, so theatre achievements (as demonstrated by a resume and/or other info included in the application) can, I think, tip the scale in a candidate’s favor but (as with schools like UMich) the grades and scores must be consistent with Northwestern’s standards. In NU’s case the academic bar is among the highest in the country, so as you say you do need very strong grades and scores to be admitted and even then it’s a crap shoot. NU is an outlier in many respects but is well worth looking into for certain types of performers.

OCU’s is a rolling decision. My son just had his audition there November 15. The school was packed with kids from the summer program. There were over 30 of them that had pizza the night between auditions, a testament to the strength of the program. He should hear in 4 weeks. From that date.

I think Rider is rolling and has a fall audition.

Thinking of all of you who are working toward upcomng ED deadlines! I think Northwestern’s is November 1st this year, including the new MT supplement. I remember this was an exciting (and stressful) time the year our D applied. Best of luck to all!
