Recently I had doubts about applying to NYU ED, as the school costs too much. If I apply Early Decision but I can’t afford it then I can’t apply to another school. So I came onto the forum looking for suggestions.
Have you run NYU’s net price calculator to see what your cost of attendance is estimated to be? https://www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/misc/npc/
Generally, if budget will be an important factor in the college decision it is best not to apply ED, so that one can compare financial aid offers.
What other schools are on your list?
If you are accepted but NYU’s financial aid offer is insufficient to support attendance, you tell them thanks but no thanks and then apply elsewhere.
You can get out of an ED acceptance if the financial aid is insufficient.
However, I only recommend applying ED only if the following two conditions are true:
- It is your absolute top choice school and
- The school appears affordable (run net price calculator) and your family has no need/interest in comparing financial offers between schools.
If BOTH condition 1 and 2 above are not true then I would not apply ED. FWIW NYU has a reputation of being stingy with financial aid.
I agree with others. You should run the NPC.
If what the NPC says is okay with you and with your family, and if you are sure that NYU is your top choice, then it makes sense to apply ED. If what the NPC says is not affordable for your family, then I would not apply ED.
