Why apply early decision?

Right now I’m applying to 3 schools and NYU is my top. I love everything about the school except for the price and the price is probably a big problem. If I don’t get enough money from there I wont be able to go so I’m wondering if I do early decision (which is binding) if I would get considered for more money than regular admission. NYU’s website says
“If you apply for early decision and NYU admits you with a financial aid package that enables you to enroll, you must accept the offer within 25 days.”
And it looks like it’s saying that if the financial package isnt big enough you are not required to enroll but I’m not sure how that would work. Any help figuring this out and if I should apply early decision?

Have you run the Net Price Calculator for NYU? I believe they are pretty stingy with aid. If you run the calculator and it doesn’t look like it’s affordable, then I would not ED.

It is true that if the financial aid package makes it unaffordable, then you can decline the admission offer.

You will NOT get more aid from NYU by applying ED. If that’s your strategy you might as well forget about it. Yes, if your FA offer isn’t sufficient then you can decline. But why not just apply RD?

Why apply ED?

  1. The school is your #1 choice
  2. You are willing to go there no matter what
  3. The school is affordable and you do not need to compare FA packages.

NYU seems to be unaffordable so do not apply ED.

If you want the opportunity to compare financial offers from different colleges then don’t apply anywhere ED. And NYU has a reputation for not giving great aid.
