Early Decision

If you apply early decision to a school and you are accepted... and you send the deposit and everything and say that you are going to go...
but you also apply to other schools and are accepted to them.....
can you change yoru mind and not go to your early decision school and go to another school instead?
Will the ED school sue you? will they tell the other school you are going to instead?....... etc
thanks

No you cannot go to the other school. They'll most likely tell the school you're going to that you've been accepted at the ED school leading to your (new) acceptance being revoked.

ED is essentially a contract.

Don't apply unless you are 99.999999999994% sure that's the school you'll be attending (and cost isn't much of a problem).

Have you had experience? Do you know for sure?
What if you work something out with the ED school and talk to them? Or you have a good excuse or something?
They will FORCE you to come there? Why do they care so much?
What if you don't want to?
How will the ED school find out the name of the new school you are going to?

I've had no experience, but I know for sure.

You can back out of ED if you prove that your family will have severe financial strain if you go to the ED school. I've heard some schools even sue for around $10000.

If you don't want to go, WHY WILL YOU APPLY THERE ?

It's common courtesy to tell them (some schools even exchange lists of accepted students).

Why do you care ? Aren't you a Sophomore at SUNY.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=3955564#post3955564

How do you prove? What do you do?
What if you go to a school that is more expensive?
I still don't understand how they will find out what new school you will be going to... or why they would care...... Do they really care that much? Why?
Aren't you allowed to change your mind? What if you find a school that you like more?....

Why even apply if you think you'll find a school that you'll like you more.

Yes exactly, you are not allowed to change your mind. You are signing contract by saying you'll go there.

Even if its a more expensive school, what if it has better Financial Aid ?

I assume, the ED school won't let you back out unless you give them the name of the school you're planning on going.

They do care that much. Because you signed a CONTRACT with them and are now refusing to go. ED is a binding decision.

You still haven't answered my question, Why do YOU care ?

When you applied ED, you also agreed that if you are accepted, you will withdraw all your other applications. Many guidance counselors will ensure that you've withdrawn them or will withdraw them for you.

Colleges and universities also share data with each other. Your name and the fact of your acceptance are not confidential and can legally be shared. That's how they'll know.

Milki--you said you can back out of ED if there's financial strain? What would qualify as financial strain?

how do you prove financial strain?

No Clue. I picked up the term on CC. I guess if you have to pay like $50,000 a year, and your EFC is $0 (In other words, received no Fin Aid).

I guess you show them the EFC, Family Income and how much it would cost you and probably an affidavit saying you applied under the presumptions that the Fin Aid would cover the costs of the said college at least partially.

I know families that have backed out of ED b/c of finances (rec'd no finaid)- - but in each case the student (1) applied to other schools AFTER the ED acceptance and (2) each of the "new" schools (UNC, UCs, UVa) had a lower full-freight than the ED school.

and what did the ED school do? did they care? tell the other school?
how did they prove it to the ED school that they were not able to go because of finances...

No unless you have a SIGNIFIGANT financial strain. Why do people ask these questions? Its absolutly not ok to break a contract.

They tell other schools, you will get your acceptance rescinded. Why are you asking so many questions?

how do you prove it?
what do you do exactly?

Why dont you answer my question first. Other people have asked you too. WHY DO YOU CARE?

Then I will answer yours.

So I ask you a direct question and you decide to leave the thread?

He doesn't answer within 8 minutes and that's leaving the thread? Hahaha.

Well he's in the therad with me. Or was.

You have to prove that the financial package is not workable or you can pay a rate to void the contract. I looked it up for Williams(was a waste) it was 10k out of pocket to walk away.
