Hey all! well im actually a junior undergrad and currently looking at grad schools containing a microbiology master program. I'm freaking out because my GPA is about a 2.0 in the science and my other major: french with a 2.7 gpa. I will be doing research during the summer and hopefully my gre in august. Hopefully I will increase my GPA this semester and my fall semester of my senior year. I dont know what to do. Should i apply? What are my chances in getting in? What should I do to enhance my chances?

When you have a life crisis in your early to mid 20s, it’s called a quarter-life crisis, lol.

But speaking to your concerns - your French GPA likely will not matter, but a 2.0 in the sciences is not going to do you any favors. You don’t have very good chances at this point since most master’s programs at least want to see a 3.0 - even a 2.75 might be borderline, but a 2.0 means that you’ve gotten mostly Cs in your major courses and means that you might not have that great a grasp on the material.

Try to get grades as good as possible this semester and in the next year - you need mostly As to balance out that 2.0. Also, other than just doing research in the summer, see if you can sign on with a professor to do research during the school year. Don’t tell yourself no before anyone else can, so you may apply to a few selected programs and see what happens. If you don’t get in (which is likely), try to find a lab tech position for a year or two, and while you are doing that, take some graduate biology courses as a non-degree student. That way you can prove that you are capable of doing graduate-level research and coursework and you may even get some strong recommendation letters out of it.
