Easier Major = Easier to get scholarship?

Is this true? I'm planning to apply to Marshall next year, but my stats are not being up to par compared to other trustee interviewers. Would it be easier to apply for journalism as I have alot of journalism ECs and get a trustee or presidential scholarship, and then switch to marshall?

stats:
SAT- 2180
GPA- 4.49 [out of 4.5]

scholarships like trustee, etc. are not decided by the individual departments/majors, but by the university.

p.s. don't count on stats! mine were higher then yours and i received dean's... so its clear they take A LOT of other things into consideration. best of luck! : )

merit scholarships are rewarded by school...as in the engineering school will have 30 trustees, the CAS has 100 to give, and so on...

btw, these arent the correct numbers, just guesstimates

oh, sorry, that wasn't the impression i had. : )

do not count on numbers.

my numbers are lower than yours but i received the pres scholarship and i also applied to Marshall.

WHOA WHOA WHOA, I never ever heard of that. I know that invitations for scholarship interviews are handled by the admissions office, without regard to major or school. But I never heard of each school giving a certain number of scholarships. For one thing, the office that gives out the Presidential, Trustee, and Dean's scholarships is a separate office from any of the academic schools. Each academic school, though, has their own scholarships to also give out.

Do correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first time I'm ever hearing of this!

I've also heard that they're rewarded by the school.

The Film School advised me that it decides on the recipients of the Trustee or Presidential scholarships for its students. Then these names are forwarded to general admissions to send out the awards, at which time other scholarships may be added (or perhaps given to the students not receiving the Trustee or Presidential). At least that is how it works for CNTV. I am still waiting to hear. Supposedly my notification had not been sent out as of Friday.

I think Florida is correct. Each school will "nominate" people, and then foinancial aid will decided who gets the trustee's/presidential. I seriously doubt they are awarded by school, but I could be wrong.

whatever. i still strongly dislike whoever did the nominations... agreed, guidez89? : )

AGREED!! But things are working out for me... I got a merit scholarships which is a about the same as a presidential. SO I can't compain. :)

So would you say I have an easier chance at being nominated by Annenberg given my very journalism-oriented ECs than by Marshall?

guidez89: yay for you! are your scholarships from usc or elsewhere?

so whoever nominates you is independant of who decides to give it to you?

Hm. Isn't the interview a deciding factor....aren't interviews by SCHOOL? i am so confused...

I think that (but am not sure) the admissions people nominate you. Then, the specific school that you applied for interviews you and decides what scholarship you'll get. Like, I applied to the engineering school, and when i went out for an interview, i was interviewed by people from the engineering school.

I think i just made that more confusing! ;)

whatever.
i still think they made an error in judgement about me...
they should have nominated me for trustee or presidential,
i swear, i think they meant to nominate me for trustee,
but wrote "deans" instead lol : )

saahjhansen, the scholarship is from SC (merit music). It isn't finalized yet, but they talked to me about it over the phone.

And I'm sorry you didn't get presidential or trustee, at least you're going!!

I think your major doesn't have much to do with the scholarship process...though my trustee interview was with a history professor, history student, and an adcom.

But yeah, I don't think an "easier" major means a scholarship.

Ok, so this is just a theory (or perhaps just a justification to myself) about scholarships. I got accepted into Film Production with consideration for a Presidential scholarship. I thought my interview went pretty well, and was extremely surprised when I received neither a Presidential, nor a Dean's scholaship, but instead a Directors scholarship (1/8 the tuition, $4,000). Now I'm not being ungrateful, I'm glad I got any money at all. But, I have to wonder...since Film Production is such a hard major to get into, and one that is coveted by so many people, perhaps they did not give me a significant scholarship because they are assuming that my acceptance into the Film program is enough to bring me to USC anyway? (since scholarships for USC are a way for them to help buy students). Now, I know there are a few Film production students w/ presidential scholarships, and perhaps I truly blew my interview, but could this be a possibility?

true_gladiator- that's exactly what I was thinking! Marshall is so competitive and has a good amount of qualified acceptees...
