I’m currently a junior and I am choosing my classes for next year. My school only offers two AP classes (AP World History & AP Calculus) meaning I am forced to take any others online. I’m currently in AP World History and in order to get into AP Calculus, you need to have taken pre-calculus which I am taking next year (only people 1 year ahead in math can take it). I’m currently taking AP Psychology online and I enjoy it because it’s a relatively easy class to take online. However, I’m having difficulty choosing classes for next year. I’m interested in English Lit, Biology and Chemistry but I don’t know if they would be better online or with a teacher. Thanks!
Those all would be better with a teacher (not sure if you can get credti for lab sciences taken online).
AP Econ would be okay online i would think.
I took AP gov (U.S.) online this year. It was really easy to do; I got a 100 in the class and the exam was super easy.
Where online did you take AP gov?
I’ve taken AP US Government, AP Macroeconomics, and 1 semester of AP Human Geography on FLVS. I’m currently enrolled in Gov and Macro and debating whether or not to sign up for S2 of Human Geo once my online workload has died down.
APHG was filled with awful, tedious assignments, so I quit it after 1 semester, but AP US Government is pretty easy to grasp and has pretty extensive book lessons. AP Macroeconomics has very short lessons, but it is difficult for me (my lowest grade right now out of 4 other APs/2 DE/Spanish IV H), and I have doubts that I will pass the Macroeconomics exam in May. The one positive aspect of taking challenging classes online is that it is very easy to secure a satisfactory grade thanks to being able to submit assignments over and over again and so on.
(On a side note, I actually regret taking ALL of these courses because I had access to an online Dual Enrollment program where I could have taken Gov and Macro through my local CC as entirely Internet-based courses. The DE classes have a lot less “fluff” assignments, are weighted the same, and guarantee you the college credits. If you have access to such a program, you might want to look into it.)
Don’t take AP English Lit, AP Bio, or ESPECIALLY AP Chem online. I took Honors Chemistry online and it was aggravating enough, so I strongly recommend against taking AP Chemistry outside of the classroom. Also, I have taken all 3 of these classes at my physical high school, and I’ve seen kids struggle, and this is somewhere they have the luxury of having a teacher explain things to them in real time. If you must take an AP class online, take a light social studies course (don’t do APUSH) or an elective. Honestly, if your school doesn’t offer a lot of AP classes, it shouldn’t hurt you in the admissions process because officers look at your application in the context of your school, and they don’t expect you to go out of your way to take courses your school doesn’t offer.
