Okay, this is way outdated but WOW! I can’t believe how many ignorant people are on this board. You really think English is an easy major? @dilksy: “As much as I may despise and look down upon English majors”. Cool I’m glad you feel so superior because you’re a “math major”. Good for you but newsflash you’re not superior or better than an English major. English is an extremely difficult major depending on the school. To earn a BA from a University in English is very time consuming. It requires more than just reading but extraordinary writing skills, communications techniques, and a valuable creative mind. If you honestly think English is easy, try writing essay’s for an advanced composition class at an accredited University and see how that turns out. What a joke.

The new generation of regulars on this board is smarter now in 2012, whychelo. We’ll be happy to help if you have any questions.

To contribute to the discussion: usually the difficulty of the major increases with job prospects, so hard work in undergrad tends to pay off well. The big outliers are Business (rather unchallenging academically but very competitive in a different way) and the biosciences (unless you’re prehealth, you’ll need to sweat for PhD for a shot at any research job at all, and your career options will still suck). History (pages and pages of primary source reading and digesting) and English certainly have more workload than majors like Anthro, Soc, Psych, or Communications, but in any case easiness alone shouldn’t be the reason to pick a major.

This is a strange discussion. What do you mean by easy? Do you mean, easy to not fail? Every subject is difficult if you seek to excel in it. It’s just as hard to be a good writer as a good engineer. Besides that, what’s easy is relative to your skills and interests.

What an odd thread this was. I took nothing but upper level poli sci, english, and history courses and they kicked my ass. (I was a transfer student and took everything else before coming to michigan.) If you’re a good reader and analytical thinker the actual thinking work shouldn’t be over your head, but those programs can grind the hell out of you with how much reading you HAVE to get done to be able to participate and write the (many) papers-- they’re not like other classes where you can blow off half the reading and still do well. It’s an exercise in stamina. And some of the poli sci classes are actually really just hard. I wouldn’t mention it in the same breath as upper level math or engineering, but that doesn’t mean it’s not challenging.

So is History/Sociology/Psychology considered hard?

Is Communication Studies Easy?! I didn’t know that. I applied transfer as Communication Studies, but I really mean to major in it not for its easiness or hardness. I checked the ranking of this major on line and UMich’s Communication ranked Top 4 among nation.

Whenever I need a joke class I turn straight to the history/sociology department. Psych can be hard depending on the class.

Comm is the stereotypical easiest major in college. Let’s just say all the Comm majors I know have a lot more time to go out then any of the other majors, and they all have 3.7+ GPAs…

Well I’m trying to go to law school and I need to keep my GPA as high as possible. Something that is not considered a joke major but also gives me enough time to study for the LSAT and do extracurricular activities.

That triple combined major thing with Philosophy, polisci, and econ looks like a prelaw major that would be challenging, if that’s what you mean.

I heard Political Science was hard.

I heard Chemical Engineering was the easiest. Pshtt what a joke.

VLSI is known around these areas to be quite easy

Does anyone have a link where I can see the average GPA by major?

Do philosophy majors have high GPAs?

For cripe sakes, major in something YOU are actually interested in; your interest will result in better grades.

Yeah. If you want an easy schedule in EECS, just take 381, 427, and 470. Only 12 credits, really easy relaxed classes.

High GPA means nothing in reality when you don’t have any critical thinking skills or common sense. Real majors teach you these, hence a successful person.

Does anyone have a link that shows average GPA by major?

Is History a hard major?
I’m thinking of taking Political Science or History or Psychology.

I am consider about Psychology too, with a double major if possible in Communication Studies.
