east asian languages budget short (chinese, korean, japanese)

If we want to minor in an east asian language, can we still take the required classes at a community college?

"if you're in L&S you are in a way unaffected"

If you're in L&S, you're still affected, just less so. If you're in L&S, and you're not a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean major, your chances of getting into a language class is still lower because priority goes to their majors first. And since there's going to be less classes available, it may be still a long shot for a non-major to get into a language class.

I was hoping that budget constraints wouldn't harm Berkeley as much as other UCs, but I suppose that this sort of thing is inevitable. Good luck to those in EALC.

Save Cal's East Asian Languages & Cultures Program Petition

I support the EALC and my heart goes out to all those hurt by this, but people need to realize that the problem with these petitions is that they are going to wrong people. The UC system has $x in budget, the petition will not increase $x based on whom it is going to. If we try to get EALC more money we are most definitely going to be slashing someone else, may be it will be Dutch Studies, may be it will be South and Southeast Asian studies, may be it will be Latin American studies, but it will be someone. That's where these petitions become problematic. How do you rule out which departments 'deserve' more money? Yes, the majority of the 45% of us who are Asian (I am Indian) are East Asian and would be 'represented' by EALC, but is that alone enough justification to strip another ailing department to bolster another?

These petitions should not be to the chancellors, these petitions should be for getting the UC system more money.
