East Coast Bias

Is alive and well for lax.

But among the schools along the East Coast that had grown used to passing the title back and forth to each other there is something else: Resentment.

After four championships in a row - a streak second only to Maryland’s seven straight in Division I women’s lacrosse history - there is a sense in Evanston that the East Coast schools don’t give the Wildcats the same credit they’d give each other.

“In the beginning it was, “Oh, it’s a fluke.’ The second time it was a fluke and then the third and fourth time it’s ‘We really don’t like ‘em,”’ said Hannah Nielsen, an All-American who has more assists than any woman in Division I lacrosse history.

They see it on blogs, where there they read cracks about how they’re too physical, too aggressive, their play is hurting the women’s sport, referees let them get away with practically mugging opponents, and that if the NCAA ever forces players to wear helmets, it will be the Wildcats’ fault.

“They never give us 100 percent credit,” said Meredith Frank, an All American midfielder. “Because we’re Northwestern, there’s something wrong with us, it’s ‘How dare they.”’

Actually, a lot of the stuff that gets written on lax message boards about NU lax is pretty humorous, and yeah, there is a lot of resentment.

They can’t believe a school located in the Midwest (a region considered backwards and obscure to some people on both coasts) could be so good. :D
