east-coast colleges with fantastic vocal departments that are less "prestigious?"

Hey guys!

I am looking for a college with a strong vocal department, but not necessarily a famous one. I have no desire to go anywhere like Stanford or NYU, but I do want to be able to double-major in something non-music related--potentially English--and take acting electives as well. I want to go somewhere with a really open atmosphere; I learn best through interaction, esp. class discussions. I've recently been looking at

Montclair State University
Houghton College
Ithaca College
Western Connecticut State University
SUNY Purchase

I was also looking at Westminster Choir College, but I was told that it is only good if you are planning to pursue choral singing?

Does anyone know anything about these colleges or others that I should look into?

Thanks so much!

My friend has the same interests as you, and she was interested in Ithaca as well as Emerson for her backup schools.

Do you know what she liked and didn't like about them by any chance? I thought Emerson was better for drama than voice, but I'll look into it.. thanks!

Temple University

Post this in the music forum.

SUNY New Paltz

Don't let the name fool you. The majors and instruction are focused on individual vocal performance and music education. All students regardless of major participate in the choirs and there is one for each grade and other opportunities to participate. The way I see it the choir element is a great way to keep you motivated by healthy competition and comraderie. It can also potentially give you a great performance opportunities. The Westminster Choir and the Symphonic Choir (members by audition) often perform with major orchestras and in venues such as Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. My daughter is a freshman vocal performance major and is loving it.
