Does anyone have any information on the new set of dorms at Elon? I am considering them for an LLC next year but I really haven’t heard much about them.
East is very nice, being the newest residence hall here at Elon. If you go to the website, I believe floor plans are available.
From what I’ve seen from visiting friends that live there, the dorms are suite style, two beds per room. Walls are like what most people have at home (not icky cinder block) and the furniture is dark brown instead of a reddish oak color.
Bathrooms are hall style, but much much nicer than what I have here in Carolina lol. The stalls have a toilet, sink, and shower, sort of like a family restroom at the YMCA, instead of it all being separate. If I remember correctly, there’s also sinks outside these stalls with a big mirror for if you just want to wash your hands/face or brush your teeth.
Everything’s new so it’s obviously much nicer aesthetic-wise compared to the other freshman dorms. However, there are some cons when it comes to location.
While all of my friends love living in East, they do say it can be a hassle walking to places.
In Historic, where I live, we’re right next to Mcewen dining hall (which also has Pei Wei and Village Juice) as well as almost all of the buildings that you’ll have classes in as a freshman. Also the closest walk to downtown Elon, which has a Pandora’s Pies, bookstore, boutique, ice cream, the Root, Tangent, Acorn coffee shop, and a few bars. It’s also right across the street from the library, athletic center, Lakeside, and Moseley (mail center, academic advising, etc).
In Global, you’re super close to the library, athletic center, the performing arts school, Lakeside Dining Hall (which has Irazú Coffee, Biscuitville, Freshii, Topio’s pizza, and mailroom), and Global Commons (which is a great place to study and has Argo Tea). Also nearby Schar Center which is great for game days.
In Colonnades, you’re next to the business school, which is ideal for business majors. You also are close to Clohan Dining Hall (which also has Fountain Market, which is like a grocery store, as well as Sweet & Savory and Boar’s Head).
Danieley is pretty far away from everything as well but has Einstein Bagels and Qdoba.
East, while not too far away, really does not have its own dining hall area, nor is it super close to a lot of freshman classes (10-15 min walk).
One thing you have to consider is how much walking time you want to spend just trying to get to places for basic stuff, like classes and food. While a 10-15 minute walk may seem like NBD, it might not be right for you. If you have 8 ams, it’s really nice to be 2 mins away from your class instead of 15, especially if you oversleep your alarm. If it’s raining out or freezing, you don’t want to have to walk that far to get food all of the time, and if you get it to go, the to go box can sometimes get soaked through if it’s really pouring out. When there’s snow days, you still need to eat. Being close to a dining hall makes travleing in icy, freezing conditions easier.
If you can deal with all that, then I highly recommend it because the dorms are BEAUTIFUL and LLCs are a great way to enhance your college experience
TL;DR:
Pros are how nice and new it is and if there’s an LLC that interests you. Cons are location for classes and food. Really comes down to what type of person you are.
Awesome! Thank you so much for all the info. And yes, I’m really interested in an LLC housed there… but not sure if it’s worth it being so far from classes and food + the library
My daughter lives in East and she has not complained about being too far away. Her classes were on the same side of campus and while it is a little bit of a walk to the dining hall it is doable. It is pretty close to the library. Her dorm is not suites, but rather traditional doubles. Everything is/was brandy new when she moved (we had to take the mattress out of the plastic). She really likes the bathroom set up as it is like using the showers at home. The floors are designed to for interaction so the lounge is very nice ( and where the washer/dryers are) and each hall has a gathering space at the end of it and one in the middle in addition to the lounge so kids are hanging out together rather than shut off in their rooms. She is part of an LLC and I think that as well as the design of the dorm has provided for a lot of interaction which is great for freshman year.
Is Carolina a must if you want to be in a sorority and want an active social life or is that a rumor? Thanks
I have heard that a lot of the girls in there have a reputation for being SUPER “girly”. I have also heard that because of the type of people usually housed there and the dorm being old in general it can get pretty gross. I believe that someone interested in going greek can thrive in any dorm, but may do better in the historic area. I believe you can choose a preference of if you want to be in a same gender dorm, but you cannot chose the actual dorm.
I have many upperclassmen friends involved in sororities on campus and all of them lived in different areas their freshman year. Yes, a decent proportion come from Carolina, but that’s also because it’s an all girls dorm. Historic is also the all-freshman residence neighborhood on campus, so it makes sense that it might appear that greek life yields the most people from that area on campus. However, I know people in ALL neighborhoods who went greek. I also have friends in ALL residence halls as a freshman. Live where you want.
As for social scene, Carolina is known to be a very noisy, social dorm. However, people in all dorms have just about the same experience. I’d say there’s a big mix of girls - none identify with a certain personality type.
All in all, Carolina is definitely a fun hall to live in but it won’t make or break your college experience. If you want to live elsewhere, like Global for instance, do that. You can still go greek and have a great social life no matter where you live your freshman year.
