Eating alone in the dining hall?

I did this because all my friends are all over the place and I was really hungry. Is this normal? I only ask because these two girls just came and sat with me out of pity and I'm just wondering if its weird to eat alone?

No, not necassarily. I eat alone most of the time too though I wish this wasn’t the case. I see many people eating alone in the dining hall

Not weird, very normal. Relax. You made two new friends.

I think all the single diners should just go up to other single diners and say hello. It’s networking practice.

I eat breakfast alone during the week because I’m usually in a hurry to eat before class.

But during the day or at night after classes I usually try to find some people to eat lunch with. If you can’t find anybody, try to pop into a spot with some people and introduce yourself! The worst that can happen is that they don’t really talk to you and it’s like you’re eating alone anyway, and if you hit it off you’ll make yourself a couple of new friends. No downside.

i’d say I split my meals 50/50 between eating alone and eating with other people last year. sometimes if i was alone I would go up to other people who were alone and sit with them. Most of the times we just sat and ate our food in peace, but I had conversations with some of them. Most people are pretty nice.

If I was eating alone and didn’t want to be bothered I would just make it look like i was in a hurry. Kept my backpack on my back, sat at the edge of my seat and shoveled food into my mouth. Got in and out as fast as possible.

It’s not weird to eat your meals alone, a lot of people do it. If someone comes over to eat with you that’s awesome, you just (possibly) made a new friend

I’ve seen a number of people eat alone. I eat alone most of the time for my meals…I really wish I had someone to sit with since I hate eating alone, particularly at Brower. The only time I don’t mind eating alone is weekdays for breakfast since I"m usually in a hurry to get to class afterwards.

If you hate eating alone, I would always look for another single diner and say “is this seat taken?” Then you will either talk or not. You don’t have to sit with them again if it doesn’t work out.

I am old so I do this and I don’t care about being rejected. You don’t want to sit with an unfriendly person anyway. Move on to the next person.

ok I’ll def try to do that. I’m just too shy to do it. :frowning: But I gotta push myself through

Try it, jazz. Then come back and tell us how it went!

This post has more views than nearly every other thread on this page so I think a lot of people have the same issue. It’s the first time you are with a bunch of total strangers, on your own, and it takes time to adjust.

Rutgers should have a dedicated (large) table in every dining hall for single diners who want to dine with other singles. It would make it easier for people to meet.

So is everyone still eating alone, or have you all taken charge of your dining experience?

Not yet, but I plan to do so tomorrow for dinner for sure. I myself have seen a lot of views in this topic. Maybe some members are intimidated to post here. I also love that idea of a large central table. I think that would be an awesome idea.

I just ate alone for lunch. That was the third time in the past week I’ve eaten alone. I’ve seen MANY other people eat alone as well - some study, or just stare into space. It isn’t weird at all.

No, it’s definitely not weird. I think a lot of people wouldn’t mind sitting with another person if they asked, though. You don’t have to be best friends.

And people must be interested in the subject because the view # is right up there with ‘how hard is it to get into parties’.

King Neptune night tonight.
