I’m a freshman here at BU, and over the past two months, I’ve encountered NUMEROUS cross-contamination and simply negligent issues. First of all, not ALL dining halls have the selection of food that @bustudent2013 mentioned… West Campus has the only wide-variety, completely enclosed GF area. Because I live in East campus, that means I have a two-mile walk or a half-hour train ride to get to food. In the smaller dining halls, like my own, cross-contamination is rampant. For example, several days ago, the gluten-free cereal dispensers were full of Mini-Wheats, an obvious cross-contamination issue. To be honest, I’m extremely disappointed that the four-thousand-dollar meal plan I am forced to pay for is going to waste, and making me sick. I’ve made several complaints, both electronic and verbal, to staff members and the nutrition center; my calls and e-mails were not returned for weeks, and I actually encountered one staff member who told me that I needed to, “be responsible for myself and figure out what I can eat.”

Are you joking? It’s not a two mile walk or half an hour train ride to get to West Campus. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk.
However, I have seen some cross contamination as well.

Don’t give up. If I was you, I would push the issue about cross contamination…I would get Dean Ellmore involved…seriously, your parents or you are paying for this food and you should not have to be worried about getting sick. Of course, you have to be aware of what you are eating, but there should be no surprises. My D is allergic to apples (go figure!) and had a problem eating a blueberry muffin that had apple pieces in it…again, go figure. Don’t give up, keep talking to the dining staff and go up the chain. You shouldn’t have to do this, good luck!

Actually, shiningstar91, from where I live it is a 2 mile walk across the entire campus. And I’m not sure how many Northeast winters you’ve lived through, but they sure don’t encourage 20-minute walks down a very blustery Comm. Ave.
And thank you, bkcsmn99. I’ve contacted numerous people from the dining hall management to the nutrition staff, all the way up to the Dean’s office. I’m awaiting a call from the Dean’s secretary. I also filed a complaint with the Americans with Disabilities Association, but they have tried to tell me that BU is outside of their jurisdiction. Based upon the ADA literature I have read, because BU receives federal funding of some sort, they are required to provide reasonable accommodations.

If you live on campus it is NOT a 2-mile walk from your room to the dining hall @ west campus. And between the B line, the 57 bus, and the BU shuttle it should never take you a half hour via public transportation if you’re too lazy to walk.
