Living Gluten-free at UCLA?

Hello! I have just been accepted to UCLA for the Class of 2014 :)
I'm pretty set on attending UCLA, but I am worried about my food situation. I have Celiac Disease, which means I can't eat gluten (which is in wheat, rye, barley, etc.). I want to go to a school that will accomodate my needs so I will actually be able to eat ;)
Does anyone know anyone who has been gluten-free or had food allergies at UCLA? Did they have good experiences?

Thanks!!

There is a Trader Joe’s near Westwood to accommodate your gluten free needs if you decide to cook for yourself. As for dorm food, you need to get in contact with the campus dietitian, who can answer your questions.

Thanks!!
Does anyone have the e-mail address or phone number of the campus dietitian? I can’t find it on UCLA’s website.

Hi, and congrats on your acceptance :)

I’m a first year right now, and my friend has Celiac Disease. I was really happy to see that she has had a great experience with Housing and with Dining Services. The housing office assigned her a double room, rather than a triple, so that she could have room for a larger refrigerator for storing all the food she buys herself from nearby stores in Westwood. Also, she has a special meal plan that applies at the dining hall connected to her residence hall (I don’t know the details but she says it works well for her). She was very well accommodated at orientation, too-- the orientation director even checked in with her to make sure that she was able to get everything she needed.

Looking at my friend’s experience, it sounds like there is nothing to worry about in terms of your needs being met. Good luck! :)

^^^ Not sure if this would work, but you should get in touch with the Office of Ombuds (or something like that). It gives priority enrollment to “disabled” students

Thanks dylpkls91!!! That’s really helpful info! It’s good to hear that other people are having a successful experience!
Binks09, yeah I’ve heard at other schools that registering with the Office for Student Disabilities will help, so I’ll give it a try at UCLA. Thanks!
