eBay: work experience or activity?

Right now I'm being conservative and have it in the activities section. I own an eBay store and have been buying/selling for 4 years.

I also run an eBay store. I'd recommend putting it on your app as work experience because it is - you're running your own business and doing all administrative tasks relating to it (trust me, I know how hard it is to organize all your shipping info when you're selling dozens of products per week...agh). Plus, it shows that you're tech-savvy AND good with people.

When I wrote it on my apps, I wrote it thus:

06/2007 - Present: Owned and operated {store name here} on eBay. Marketed, sold, and shipped {product name}. Maintained satisfied customer base of {###} customers, with seller rating of 99.7% satisfaction.

Aren't you technically supposed to be 18+ to do it? I think it's illegal if you're under that. But I don't know if admissions will care or not though, probably not

Did you make money? If so, it's work experience.

My son occasionally sells on ebay. He didn't list it as an EC or work experience but alluded to it in one of his essays.

Well, you "technically" should be 18+ to do it, but I know that it is a common practice among high school students and that it is commonly put on applications in some form or another. I have made profits and I do sell/ buy on a regular basis, but I am no powerseller by any means- ~4-5 hours a week.

Part of the reason why I'm wondering whether to put it under work is because I currently don't have anything under the "work" category. Ebay is what I do to get spare cash. I've had lots of work experience in situations where I chose to volunteer when I could have been paid good money. I just don't want to come across as a kid who doesn't know what the meaning of work (in the non-academic sense) is.

I dont have an ebay store (not worth paying the fees) but have still made total sales of over $5500 on my individual ebay account over the past few years reselling clearanced merchandise from big box store.

FresnoMom - I would totally agree there. However, there's a big difference between occasionally selling items and having a store.

Pelts - I would like to reinforce my opinion above. Obviously you are running the eBay store for the same reasons that one usually gets a job - for spending money, etc. - so DEFINITELY list it under work experience.

I don't even remember that stipulation (18+) from when I signed up (I was, however, at least 18 at the time), so I doubt any admissions counselor is going to point it out and say, "OH MY GOD THIS PERSON JOINED EBAY ILLEGALLY - AUTO-REJECT!"

You have to agree that you are over 18+ to register an eBay account along with agreeing user agreement and privacy policy and all that stuff. And apparently if they somehow find out that you're under 18, they will disable your account.. by law or something.

But yeah, I agree that the admissions won't care.
