I'm a junior looking to apply to top schools as a neuroscience major. Because my GPA may be a bit subpar, I need to stand out thru my extracurriculars. So far I secured a position at a neuro research lab this summer, won first place in a CT high school neuroscience olympiad, won 3rd place in a essay contest about mental illnesses, and have a blog for teen neuro-enthusiasts. Anything else I can do related to the field that would help me stand out?

Anyone?..

Bumpity bump I’d love some advice :)

Bump just for the heck of it…

Your ECs are pretty good in your field, but you have to have more than that. Schools want to see a diverse candidate who is still passionate about a certain subject. I’m assuming you have more ECs in other areas?

Yaya of course. I’m the head of a youth organization I started a chapter of in my neighborhood and have been involved in it all of HS. Also I’ve done drama club, yearbook, all the usual for all of HS. It’s just that the ECs I share in my original post I feel are unique enough to be a bit of a “hook” so I was wondering what I can do to improve that area.

Okay, good. I think that the ECs you mentioned are definitely strong, especially since ECs in neuroscience are probably hard to find. If you’re leaning towards medical neurosciences, it could definitely pay off to see if there are volunteer opportunities at your local clinic or hospital. I would maybe recommend trying to find an actual paying job as soon as you can, especially if it’s somewhere that you can connect to your major. It seems like that’s one area that no one actually seems to have, and it definitely shows loyalty to your subject area.
